Kungsträdgården ( German : Königsgarten ) is the name of apublic parkin central Stockholm in the Norrmalm district. It is located behind the Royal Swedish National Opera on the north bank of the Norrström and is one of the oldest parks in the Swedish capital.

history

Originally it was the palace garden of the Makalös renaissance palace built between 1635 and 1643 . The complex was not open to the public, armed guards made sure that only members of the court visited the park. Under King Gustav III. However, it opened up to the general public, and the park became a preferred place for big-city entertainment. Sweden's 18th century bard Carl Michael Bellman describes this park life in his songs. Due to these changes, the structure of the park was also heavily redesigned in 1796. Among other things, a greenhouse was converted into a dance hall. In 1825, Makalös Castle, located in the southern part of the park, burned down.

Several cafes and restaurants invite you to linger in the park. There are also various seating areas, a water area and publicly accessible chess games. In addition to recreation, Kungsträdgården is used for various social events and exhibitions, for which there is sufficient space and a covered stage. An ice rink is built during the winter. In the vicinity there are various fast food restaurants, retail stores, the NK Stockholm , the headquarters of Sweden's largest bank, the Skandinaviska Enskilda banks, and the Royal Opera .

There are various bus and ferry lines as well as a tram stop in the immediate vicinity. Due to the construction of the underground station , the so-called Elm War broke out in May 1971 .

Today the much-visited park is owned by the City of Stockholm, and management and maintenance have been the responsibility of an event agency owned by the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce since 1963 .
