William "Bill" Schafhauser (born March 12, 1962 in Saint Paul , Minnesota ) is a former Swiss - American ice hockey player who was active from 1989 to 1996 in the National League A for EV Zug .

Career

Schafhauser began playing ice hockey at the local Hill-Murray High School . From 1980 he played for Northern Michigan University in the National Collegiate Athletic Association . The qualities of the defense remained the NHL - Scouts not hidden. In the 1981 NHL Entry Draft , he was drafted in the sixth round in 117th place by the Chicago Black Hawks . In 1982 he was called up for the U-20 national team of the USA and reached sixth place with this at the Junior World Championship in his own country.

After graduating, he started his professional career in the second-rate International Hockey League . Although he was awarded the Ken McKenzie Trophy for the best newcomer in his first season , Schafhauser did not make the leap into the NHL. So he decided to try his luck in Europe and signed with SV Ritten-Renon for a year in Italy . Thanks to grandparents on his mother's side, he received Swiss citizenship and was able to play in the Swiss championship from then on without burdening the quota of foreigners. After a season in the National League B at SC Herisau , he moved to the top division of the EV Zug in 1989 , with which he advanced to the playoff finals. His brother Pat , nine years his junior, was his teammate in Zug from 1991 to 1994.

During the 1995/96 season, his brother Pat injured himself so badly in a game that he was henceforth paraplegic . After a break, which he used to stand by his brother, he decided to continue his own career. After suffering knee problems, he still had to end his career at the end of the season.
