The 48th A Ice Hockey World Championship and 59th European Ice Hockey Championship took place from April 15 to 29 in Helsinki and Tampere , Finland . The other groups were played in Klagenfurt in Austria and in Jaca in Spain . Last year we took part in a total of 24 teams.
A world championship
The Group A tournament was held in Helsinki and Tampere, Finland. The world championship once again resulted in a sovereign title win (meanwhile the 18th) for the USSR, which was almost certain already after the preliminary round. It was also the 4th title in a row. The US's decline came as a big surprise. At the same time, the USSR became European champions for the 21st time. The 1982 World Cup was the only one in which the best player in the world at the time, Wayne Gretzky , took part.
mode
The A-World Championship returned to the pre-1979 mode. So there was another preliminary round in which all 8 teams played against each other and then a final round of the best four. The only difference: there shouldn't be a separate relegation round. The relegated team should already be determined after the preliminary round.
The recent change of mode at the A-WM now also led to a fundamental reform of the European ice hockey championship . Only the games of the preliminary round should now be used for the evaluation. The ranking was no longer decisive, as in previous years, but, as was the case between 1969 and 1975, the results of the European teams among themselves. So there was again a separate EM table.
