Gilles Emile Meloche (born July 12, 1950 in Montreal , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who worked for the Chicago Black Hawks , California Golden Seals , Cleveland Barons , Minnesota North Stars and Pittsburgh Penguins during his playing career between 1969 and 1988 Has played in the National Hockey League , and now - coach and scout . In these functions he won the Stanley Cup four times with Pittsburgh .
His son Éric Meloche and his younger brother Denis Meloche were also professional ice hockey players.
Career
Meloche first played from 1969 to 1970 for the Verdun Maple Leafs in the Québec Major Junior Hockey League , with which he also took part in the prestigious Memorial Cup . He was then selected in the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft by the Chicago Black Hawks , who used him mainly with the Flint Generals in the International Hockey League during the 1970/71 season . Despite the great competition in Chicago's squad with Tony Esposito and Gary Smith , Meloche also made his debut in the National Hockey League .
After the end of his first professional season, the Black Hawks gave their young talent together with Paul Shmyr to league rivals California Golden Seals and received Gerry Desjardins in return . At the Golden Seals, the goalkeeper established himself immediately as a regular and remained loyal to the franchise even after the relocation and renaming in Cleveland Barons until the summer of 1978, before the Barons dissolved. Some of the players - including Meloche - played for the Minnesota North Stars from then on . There the goalkeeper spent the most successful time of his career and reached the play-offs in six of seven years of play , including the final series for the Stanley Cup in the 1980/81 season . It was only in May 1985 that Meloche left the North Stars after he was transferred to the Edmonton Oilers for Paul Houck . However, they gave it to the Pittsburgh Penguins less than four months later and without any effort , which Marty McSorley , Tim Hrynewich and a few weeks later also Craig Muni gave to Edmonton. He spent the last three years of his playing career in Pittsburgh, which he ended in the summer of 1988.
Subsequently, Meloche worked from the 1989/90 season as a goalkeeping coach and scout for the Penguins. He held this dual function until summer 2005. He then worked exclusively as a scout in the 2005/06 season and exclusively as a goalkeeper coach between 2006 and 2013. Since 2013 his work has been limited to scouting again. In his more than 25 years as a member of the coaching staff, he won the Stanley Cup four times in 1991, 1992, 2009 and 2016.
International
Meloche played for his home country at the 1982 World Cup in Finland and won the bronze medal there. He shared the post in the gate with Greg Millen . Both played five tournament games each.
