The Cleveland Barons ( IPA : [ˈkliːvlənd b'ærəns] ) were a professional ice hockey team in the National Hockey League (NHL), which played from 1976 to 1978 in Richfield , near Cleveland , Ohio . The team was originally formed in California and played as the California Golden Seals before moving to Oakland .
history
As Cleveland Barons, the team played at the Richfield Coloseum in the Cleveland suburb of Richfield . The Coloseum was built for the Cleveland Crusaders in the World Hockey Association and at that time had the largest audience capacity in the NHL. But luck was not granted to the barons either. After two seasons, the Barons merged with the Minnesota North Stars . The brothers George and Gordon Gund , the owners of the Barons, now became owners of the North Stars.
The Cleveland Barons were the last team in the four major North American sports profile leagues to cease playing.
In 1991 the Gunds wanted to move the North Stars to the Bay Area, but the NHL vetoed it. However, as a kind of separation of the connection between North Stars and Barons, some players from Minnesota were allowed to join the newly formed San Jose Sharks .
