The 1969/70 NHL season was the 53rd season in the National Hockey League . 12 teams played 76 games each. The Stanley Cup won the Boston Bruins after a 4-0 win in the final series against the St. Louis Blues .
In the third year as well, the new teams were unable to narrow their gap to the established " Original Six ". Again the Blues were their representative in the final and again they were without a single win. It was Bobby Orr's season and here the experts agree it was the most outstanding season a single player has ever had in the NHL. Previously existing records fell and Orr raised the bar to unimaginable heights. Last year Pat Stapleton had set a template record with 50 assists, Orr had caught him on January 15th. Three days later, his own record of 64 points from a defender was due. Exactly a month later, it was his own record of 21 goals from a defender who was now a thing of the past. 33 goals, 87 assists and thus 120 points were the new records, but not the absolute numbers, but the comparison with the old values made this season so unique. Never again has a player set the records like this and never has a defender been the best scorer of the season. Even in the play-offs, the records were not safe from Orr. The best marks for defenders were here since 1938 with 5 goals with Babe Siebert and since 1962 with 16 points with Tim Horton . Bobby was the measure of all things with 9 goals, 11 assists and 20 points. At the end of the season he was honored with 4 trophies.
The game of defenders in the NHL and the expectations of it was no longer what it was before the season. Was there anything else this season? Yes! A young goalkeeper caused a stir in Chicago. Tony Esposito managed 15 shutouts in his rookie season which was a rookie record and hadn't made a goalkeeper since the late 1920s. That year Terry Sawchuk , perhaps the best goalkeeper in NHL history, died at the age of only 40. He succumbed to serious injuries sustained in an argument with his teammate, Ron Stewart, in his garden. Two other bullies also caused a sensation. Boston's Ted Green and Wayne Maki from St. Louis clashed in a prep game. The two forgot what the thugs were actually for and fought a spectacular battle.
