Gordon "Gordie" Howe OC (born March 31, 1928 in Floral , Saskatchewan , † June 10, 2016 in Toledo , Ohio ) was a Canadian ice hockey player . As "Mr. Hockey “named striker was one of the most important players in North American ice hockey - Howe scored 801 goals in his long career in the NHL , making him the second most successful goalscorer in NHL history after Wayne Gretzky .
Career
Gordie Howe made his debut in the NHL in 1946 at the age of 18. He played his first game for the Detroit Red Wings and was part of the production line there in the following years .
He quickly became known as a goalscorer and talented playmaker. Because of his physical strength , he dominated his opponents. Overall, Gordie Howe was active in professional ice hockey for six decades. He managed to make it into the top 5 of the scorer ranking for 20 consecutive years. In the 1960/61 season , Howe was the first NHL player to reach 1000 points (goals plus assists ) - with 1850 points in the regular games, he is still in fourth place. The following season , Gordie Howe scored his 500th goal on March 14, 1962 as the second player in NHL history .
Gordie Howe won the Stanley Cup four times with the Detroit Red Wings . After 25 years a wrist injury forced Gordie Howe to end his active career at the end of the 1970/71 season. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972 .
A year later he signed a contract with the Houston Eros from the recently formed World Hockey Association (WHA), which also signed his sons Marty and Mark Howe . After a wrist operation, nothing stood in the way of a new professional ice hockey debut. With the Houston Eros Gordie Howe was champion in the WHA in 1974 and 1975 , with Gordie Howe being elected Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the WHA in 1974 at the age of 46 .
After the WHA stopped playing in 1979 and merged with the NHL, Howe, now 51, signed a contract with the Hartford Whalers for a final NHL season. He played all 80 league games - Howe is the record holder with 1,767 NHL games .
In 1997 he signed a contract for a game with the Detroit Vipers from the International Hockey League (IHL). He set a remarkable record after coming on the ice for a move. At the age of almost 70 and in the 6th decade he played a professional ice hockey game.
Marty and Mark Howe - his sons - were his teammates with the Houston Eros and Hartford Whalers. His wife, Colleen, is the founder of the Detroit Junior Red Wings . The Detroit Red Wings and Hartford Whalers honored him after the end of his career by no longer awarding his jersey number 9.
Trivia
- His brother Vic Howe (1929-2015) was also active as a professional hockey player, as were his two sons Mark (* 1955) and Marty Howe (* 1954). Grandson Travis Howe (* 1978) played ice hockey as an amateur player.
- Bart Simpson used the face of Howe as part of a prank, he Mrs. Krabappel subsequently Bart the Lover (dt. The personal ad ) the television series The Simpsons plays.
- Gordie Howe is a member of eleven different Hall of Fames.
- His name, nickname ("Mr. Hockey") and his wife's nickname ("Mrs. Hockey") are registered trademarks.
- The Gordie Howe Hattrick is a term used to describe the achievement of scoring a goal and assisting in a game and participating in a brawl that has at least a five-minute time penalty . Gordie Howe has managed to achieve such a hat trick twice in his entire career .
- The Canadian ska band "The Planet Smashers" dedicated the song "Uncle Gordie" to him
- In the 2016/17 season, the Detroit Red Wings wore a "9" on their jersey in honor of Howe
