The 1960/61 NHL season was the 44th season in the National Hockey League . Six teams played 70 games each. The Stanley Cup won the Chicago Blackhawks after a 4-2 win in the final series against the Detroit Red Wings for the third time. After a sensational start to the season, it was expected that Frank Mahovlich would become the second player in NHL history to break 50 goals. After 29 games he had 26 goals, eleven games before the end of the season he was missing nine. He managed just seven and was overtaken on the home stretch by Bernie Geoffrion , who set the previous record of 50 goals. The first to hit this mark was Maurice Richard , who quit his skates before the season started. The game had gotten too fast for him. The Hockey Hall of Fame waived the usual three-year waiting period and accepted him immediately.
