Andrew James "Andy" Bathgate (born August 28, 1932 in Winnipeg , Manitoba , † February 26, 2016 in Brampton , Ontario ) was a Canadian ice hockey player who played for the New York Rangers , Toronto Maple Leafs , Detroit Red Wings from 1952 to 1971 and Pittsburgh Penguins played in the National Hockey League .
Career
A year before his career in the NHL began, it was almost over. He injured his knee on his youth team in Guelph and was given a steel plate. With the Guelph Biltmores he won the Memorial Cup in 1952 . With him were other future NHL greats such as Harry Howell and Dean Prentice in the roster of the Biltmores.
Despite constant knee discomfort, Bathgate became one of the NHL's top scorers. He made his debut in the NHL with the New York Rangers in the 1952/53 season . He was convincing in terms of running, playfulness and his good shot. However, the Rangers were a weak team during this period.
During the 1963/64 season he was given together with Don McKenney to the Toronto Maple Leafs . That season he won the Stanley Cup with the Maple Leafs . Although he mostly shone with his accuracy, one missed shot caused a special stir. On November 1, 1959, he met Montreal's Jacques Plante in the face. After a treatment break, Plante was the first goalkeeper to return to the game with a face mask. Together with Billy Harris , he moved to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for Marcel Pronovost and Lowell MacDonald .
In the WHA , Bathgate took over as coach of the Vancouver Blazers in 1973 for one season.
In 1978 he was honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame .
