Henry Vernon "Harry" Howell (born December 28, 1932 in Hamilton , Ontario ; † March 10, 2019 in Ancaster , Ontario) was a Canadian ice hockey player , coach , functional and scout . The defender played in the course of his active career between 1949 and 1976, among other things, 1449 games for the New York Rangers , Oakland Seals and California Golden Seals and Los Angeles Kings in the National Hockey League(NHL) before ending his career with the New York Golden Blades and Jersey Knights , San Diego Mariners and Calgary Cowboys in the World Hockey Association (WHA).
Howell spent most of his career with the New York Rangers, where he still holds the franchise record for games played (1,160), which he led as captain and which no longer award his jersey number 3 . In 1967 he was honored with the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the best defensive player in the NHL, before he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1979. After his playing career he was briefly active as general manager of the Cleveland Barons and as head coach of the Minnesota North Stars in the NHL before he devoted himself to a long career as a scout.
Career
Howell played during his junior years between 1950 and 1952 with the Guelph Biltmores in the Ontario Hockey Association . With the team he won the J. Ross Robertson Cup twice and the George Richardson Memorial Trophy and the Memorial Cup once each . The team thus secured the triple in 1952 .
In the 1952/53 season , the defender made his debut with the New York Rangers in the National Hockey League . His persistence was one of the positive qualities that set him apart. The Rangers were one of the weaker teams in the NHL at the time. In 16 years playing for the Rangers, he only missed 17 games. By far his best season he completed the season 1966/67 . He was 35 years old that game year and managed to score more than ten goals for the first time. He also only reached the 40 point mark this season. For this he was honored with the election to the First All-Star Team of the NHL and awarded the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the best defender in the league.
After playing 1,160 games for the Rangers - more than any other player who wore the New York jersey to date - they sold him to the Oakland Seals . During the second season with the team, which was now called the California Golden Seals , he was passed on to the Los Angeles Kings . Here he played until the end of the 1972/73 season .
Like many other veterans of the NHL Howell joined the World Hockey Association . His team in the 1973/74 season were the New York Golden Blades , which brought him back to his sporting home, New York. But the WHA team could not assert itself in the city and so a move to the southwest followed. The new team were the San Diego Mariners . With the Calgary Cowboys he played the 1975/76 season before ending his active career.
In his long career he was never on a team with which he could have won a title, but with 1,581 games in the NHL and WHA he had a record that had never been topped by any ice hockey defender. As a scout for the Edmonton Oilers , he managed to immortalize his name on the Stanley Cup at the end of the 1989/90 season . At the ice hockey world championship in 1978 he looked after the Canadian national team as an assistant coach. In the 1978/79 season he was the head coach of the Minnesota North Stars . In 1979 he was honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame . In 2009 , the New York Rangers banned his jersey number 3.
Howell died on March 10, 2019 at the age of 86 in a nursing home in Ancaster , near his hometown of Hamilton.
