Coordinates: 29 ° 50 '  S , 148 ° 12'  O Walgett Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . The area is 22,308.4 km² and has about 6,100 inhabitants.

Walgett is located in the north-western region of the state on the Queensland border about 650 km northwest of metropolitan Sydney and 690 km southwest of Brisbane . The area includes 62 hamlets and hamlets, including Bairnkine, Caramia, Carinda, Come By Chance, Cumborah, Cryon, Lightning Ridge , Pokataroo and Walgett, as well as parts of Burren Junction, Collarenebri, Pilliga and Rowena. The headquarters of the Shire Council is in the town of Walgett in the center of the LGA, where about 1,500 residents live.

The Walgett Shire Council has 12 members elected by LGA residents. Walgett is not divided into districts. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.

After conflicts between representatives of the City of Lightning Ridge and the rest of the Shire and further incidents, the council was no longer able to work and was therefore dissolved by the state government in 2004. Until new elections in September 2008, Walgett will be administered by a deployed administrator and four managers.
