Walgett is a small town in the state of New South Wales, Australia .

Geographical location

The town with about 1,550 inhabitants is located at the confluence of the two rivers Barwon River and Namoi River .

Walgett is the center and headquarters of the Walgett Shire local government .

history

Walgett was founded in March 1885. Once the settlement was a port for paddle steamers that sailed on the Murray-Darling river system. At the same time, Walgett was a regional center for the cotton industry and a trading post for wheat . Today Walgett is the starting point for opal prospectors .

In the 1980s, Walgett's residents were involuntarily the target of derision and ridicule. The location was a running gag on the sitcom Hey Dad! , and the residents of Walgett, represented by the character Betty , were synonymous with simple-minded country beasts.
