Hey dad! ( Written in the original Australian Hey Dad ..! ) is a 291 episode Australian sitcom that was filmed from 1987 to 1994. In Germany, the series was first broadcast from January 9, 1990 to September 30, 1997.

action

Martin Kelly is a successful architect from Chatswood , a suburb of Sydney . He is widowed and a single father of three children. He tries his best to be a liberal and open-minded father, but his offspring, Jenny, Simon and Debbie, simply consider him a philistine despite his ironic swipes. However, they also do their best to make life difficult for Martin.

The characters

Martin Kelly : The architect is intelligent and is pretty much alone in the whole house. His secretary Betty Wilson is a frequent target of his sometimes extremely sarcastic and cynical comments without her ever realizing it. He is a widower and likes to think back to his wife. She can be seen briefly in the episode “Dinner for Two”.

Conversely, Betty intuitively avenges herself through her merciless incompetence. For example, even after more than 250 episodes, she is still unable to pronounce the word architect and says artichect instead . Likewise, to Martin's chagrin, she speaks with her typewriter as if she were a living being.

Betty is a real country bumpkin , comes from the town of Walgett and settled down as a secretary in Kelly's household right after Mrs. Kelly's death. From a professional point of view, Betty is of no use as a secretary, but she plays a role that cannot be replaced by the human component in the Kelly house, as she has a big heart and is always at the side of the family in all walks of life.

Simon Kelly , Martin's eldest son at the age of 18, is not stupid and wants to study mechanical engineering, but his boastful demeanor and his belief in his own infallibility leave him and his father in many embarrassing situations. Simon considers himself irresistible with women and tries again and again to persuade his father to buy a new car because the old Volvo is not exactly befitting his class. He likes to let the macho hang out, but seems pretty helpless when he gets into a precarious situation again.

Simon's best friend Nudge is actually called Gerald Noritis, but he has almost forgotten that name. Nudge has something like Betty's IQ. He often looks unkempt, and his main hobbies are food and the Phantom comic series . In his character, Nudge is shown as a contrast to Simon.

Debbie Kelly , actually Deborah, is 16 years old, wants to study art and has regular friends that change over the course of the series. Besides her frequent amorous escapades, she deals almost exclusively with shopping and telephoning, the latter mostly with her friend Tiffany (who never appears in the series). Debbie is in the final stages of puberty and is characterized above all by her limitless naivete. Her driving skills regularly annoy father Martin: Her specialty is parking Martin's Volvo diagonally in the garage.

Jenny , the baby of the Kelly household at the age of seven, has an above-average stubborn head when it comes to wanting to have her own horse and having it quartered in her room. She believes that she has her father in hand and thus also the trump cards against her siblings in him.

However, as a result, she gets on her father's nerves more than she actually wrapped him around her finger. Jenny regularly reacts disgruntled when she is expelled from the room as soon as the conversations get a bit "slippery". She then avenges herself by enjoying her favorite dish of beans with tomato sauce and the resulting "body winds".

Development of the series

The first episodes of the series were shot in 1984, but the first episode was not broadcast until the spring of 1987. Hey Dad ..! was initially a huge success in Australia. The series was characterized by its subtle puns. This also stopped about the first 150 episodes.

It was often criticized that the series became more and more flat and meaningless from this point on. It was also criticized that the actors were gradually changed over the course of the entire series and that the new actors could not reach the high level of their predecessors. Ultimately, the series in Australia was canceled at short notice in the middle of the seventh season in 1994 and was last seen as the epitome of poor entertainment.

The personnel changes in detail:

The original line-up:

  • Robert Hughes as Martin Kelly
  • Julie McGregor as Betty Wilson
  • Paul Smith as Simon Kelly
  • Simone Buchanan as Debbie Kelly
  • Sarah Monahan as Jenny Kelly
  • Christopher Truswell as Nudge

After the 38th episode, Simon actor Paul Smith was replaced by Christopher Mayer (from episode 40). In the action, Simon went to the USA for one summer (episode 39) to explain his short-term absence. The only problem was that Paul Smith and Christopher Mayer bore no resemblance to one another, and in the series the visual difference was also completely ignored. The reason for Paul Smith's departure was allegedly his indiscipline during the shooting as well as gambling debts and gambling addiction. The replacement of the two actors was not necessarily a disadvantage for the series in this case, as many viewers believed that Christopher Mayer was the better Simon and was better able to interact with Nudge . The only bad thing was that Mayer, who was 26 years old at the time, was only partially believable as an actor for 18-year-old Simon .

With episode 165, Debbie actress Simone Buchanan dropped out of the series to accept other offers. Her departure has been explained by the fact that she will be a cocktail waitress at a vacation hotel on an island. She was later to come back as a guest star for one episode (No. 268). From episode 166, for Simone Buchanan, Rachael Beck came into the house as Samantha (Sam) Kelly , a niece of Martin . Rachael Beck did quite well, too, but her character was too similar to Debbie's; so it was difficult to bring in an independent note. She also struggled with the fact that Simone Buchanan was very popular with viewers, especially the male ones.

After episode 174, Christopher Truswell, the Nudge actor, left the series. His exit was not even explained at first, he simply disappeared between two episodes and was then no longer mentioned. Ben Hubner , played by Ben Oxenbould, joined the series from episode 177. He was initially intended as a friend and fellow student of Simons as a substitute for nudge ; however, after Christopher Mayer left, he moved in with the Kellys and thus took over the role of Simons . The nudges function as the somewhat strange guy from the neighborhood was then taken over by the tot Arthur McArthur , played by Matthew Krok, who had a guest role for the first time in episode 169 and later from episode 175 onwards.

With episode 187, Christopher Mayer also left, from episode 188 Matthew Krok and Ben Oxenbould were part of the regular cast. The replacement of Christopher Truswell and Christopher Mayer marked the show's definitive demise, as Ben was just a pretty cheap copy of Nudge and Ben Oxenbould couldn't remotely bring in the humor and facial expressions of Christopher Truswell. And Arthur was also able to bring a breath of fresh air into the series at the beginning due to his somewhat unusual behavior, but this effect was already used up after only a few episodes.

After episode 227, Sarah Monahan, the Jenny actress, got out. Since the underage daughter could not be deleted without explanation, Jenny was sent to boarding school for three episodes (No. 228 to 230). She returned in the episode "Oh You Big Egg" (No. 231), but was replaced by Angela Keep . This also had the disadvantage that the resemblance to Sarah Monahan was not that great. However, she was a much better actress than the often wooden acting Sarah Monahan. An explanation for Jenny's "new" appearance was the series again owed the viewer. A few short scenes were devoted to Jenny's new look .

After episode 264, Martin Kelly actor Robert Hughes left the series. This was explained with a job change to Saudi Arabia . For him, from episode 263, Mark Owen-Taylor came into the series as Greg Russell , also an architect and friend of Martin Kelly , who is meanwhile supposed to look after the house. Owen-Taylor didn't even try to copy Robert Hughes and brought his own note to Hey Dad ..! , but he couldn't step out of the shadow of a Martin Kelly .

The last to drop out after episode 267 was Samantha actor Rachael Beck, which was also explained by a move. For them then came Belinda Emmett (first time in episode 266), who was the daughter of Greg Russell, Tracy , until the end of the series.

In the end, there was only Betty actress Julie McGregor left of the original cast.

facts and figures

From 1986 to 1994, 291 episodes of the sitcom were produced in Australia by Gary Reilly Productions . Chief writer was John Flanagan, who also wrote most of the scripts. Additional scripts were written by Gary Reilly, Ian Rochford and Kym Goldsworthy. Most episodes were directed by Sally Brady and directed by Robert Meillon, Tina Butler and Kevin Burston. The message was Hey Dad ..! on Seven Network .

The sitcom was shot live in front of an audience, so the laughs in the original were real.

Accusation from Robert Hughes 2010

In March 2010, Sarah Monahan gave an interview for an Australian women's magazine. In this interview, she reported that one of the main characters on the Hey Dad! having been sexually molested. At first, however, she did not state who it was. The Australian television station Channel 9 announced on March 24, 2010 that it was Robert Hughes. This denies the allegations. Sarah Monahan was not the only one who made the accusation against Robert Hughes. Simone Buchanan and Ben Oxenbould made identical allegations, in which his name was mentioned. Other former stars of the series have confirmed that there were rumors of Robert Hughes's actions as early as the 1980s. Oxenbould testified in an interview that he had observed inappropriate actions in other young guest actresses. On May 16, 2014, Hughes was sentenced to a maximum of 10 years and 9 months in prison.

Hey dad! in Germany

From January 1990, Hey Dad! initially broadcast on ARD in the afternoon program. The broadcaster bought the first 149 episodes and broadcast them over a period of around two years. After that they were repeated in several third programs until 1995 . From March 13, 1997, kabel eins repeated these 149 episodes daily in the morning program (initially around 11 a.m., later at 6 a.m.), after which the station broadcast the remaining episodes every day until September.

Since June 13, 1996, Hey Dad! also on the former pay-TV transmitter DF1 shown.

On October 24, 2008 the first, on March 27, 2009 the second, on September 25, the third season was released on DVD. Season 4 has been available since March 2010.

The German synchronization

The first 149 episodes shown by ARD were dubbed under the direction of Arne Elsholtz . He tried successfully to translate the English pun into German. The episodes ordered by Kabel 1 from number 150 onwards had a lower budget and less effort in production. On the one hand, many speakers were changed, also because they were probably too expensive. The dubbing director was less careful with the translation, so that many gags petered out.

Incidentally, ARD made a mistake in the German adaptation of the series. When it was first broadcast, the two Simon actors were mixed up in the opening credits : In the photo of Paul Smith, Christopher Mayer's name was displayed and vice versa. The transmitter only corrected the error on the first repetition.
