Erik Sven Gunnar Karlsson (born May 31, 1990 in Landsbro ) is a Swedish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the San Jose Sharks in the National Hockey League since September 2018 and plays for them in the position of defender . Previously, he spent nine years with the Ottawa Senators , which he had also led as team captain for four seasons . Karlsson is considered one of the best defenders of his generation, where he is characterized above all by his offensive qualities; so he has already twice been awarded the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the best defensive player in the NHL. With the Swedish national team , Karlsson won the silver medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics and the bronze medal at the 2010 World Cup .
Career
Karlsson began his career as a hockey player in the junior division of IF Troja-Ljungby , where he was active until 2006. The defender then played for the junior teams of Södertälje SK and Frölunda HC , before making his debut for the professional team Frölunda in the Elitserien in the 2007/08 season . He scored a goal in a total of 13 games. He was then selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2008 in the first round as a total of 15th player by the Ottawa Senators , but initially not yet committed. In his first full season in professional ice hockey, the right-handed shooter scored six goals in 56 games and made seven assists in the Elitserien for Frölunda. He also contributed an assist in seven missions for Borås HC in the second-rate HockeyAllsvenskan .
For the 2009/10 season Karlsson received a contract with the Ottawa Senators, for which he was in the game against the New York Rangers on October 3, 2009 for the first time on the ice. At the same time, he was also used in the Binghamton Senators youth team . In the 2011/12 season he made his breakthrough with the Senators, when he led all defenders in the league in goals (19) and assists (59) and therefore received the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the best defensive player in the NHL; he was also elected to the First All-Star Team . The following summer, Karlsson extended his contract with the Senators for seven years, receiving an estimated $ 45.5 million during that time. During the 2012/13 lockout , Karlsson played for Jokerit .
In February 2013, Karlsson was injured by an opponent during a league match in a tackle. He pulled a partial tear of the Achilles tendon in his left foot and was therefore out for the rest of the season.
For the 2013/14 season Karlsson was back and took over together with the captain Jason Spezza the lead role within the team. In a mixed second half of the season, however, no play-off placement could be achieved. Karlsson was again the defender with the most scorer points in the league (74). He was able to repeat this success in the following year (66), where he now led the Senators as captain after the departure of Spezza. He was also honored for the second time with the James Norris Memorial Trophy and with the appointment to the First All-Star Team.
In the 2015/16 season Karlsson reached his previous high of 82 points in 82 games, leading the league defenders for the third time in a row and for the fourth time overall. He also set his own franchise record from the 2011/12 season. He also became the first defender since Bobby Orr (1974/75) to lead the league in assists (66), and the first defender since Paul Coffey (1985/86), who placed in the top 5 of the scorer list . In the choice of the best defender in the league, Karlsson reached only second place behind Drew Doughty , but was appointed to the First All-Star Team of the NHL; as did the year after when Brent Burns received the trophy.
In September 2018, after long rumors of change, Karlsson was transferred to the San Jose Sharks together with Francis Perron . In return, Senators Chris Tierney , Dylan DeMelo , Rūdolfs Balcers , young player Josh Norris received a conditional first-round vote for the 2020 NHL Entry Draft and a second-round vote for the 2019 NHL Entry Draft . The right to vote for the first round will become one for the 2019 draft if the Sharks miss the playoffs in the 2018/19 season. In addition, Ottawa will receive an additional second-round vote for the NHL Entry Draft 2021 if the Swede extends his contract in San Jose, which expires in the 2019/20 season; this came true. Furthermore, this right to vote should even become one for the first round, provided the Sharks reach the Stanley Cup final in 2019. As an additional clause it was noted that the Senators would receive another first-round vote if Karlsson should be transferred back to the Eastern Conference . This is to prevent a second "Causa Mike Hoffman ", who a few months earlier was transferred from Ottawa to San Jose and then directly to the Florida Panthers .
At the Sharks, Karlsson played a season marked by injuries, so he came to only 53 appearances in the regular season and also did not completely deny the subsequent playoffs , in which San Jose moved into the conference finals and failed there because of the St. Louis Blues . Still, he signed a new eight-year deal with the Sharks in June 2019, which should earn him an average annual salary of $ 11.5 million. This will make him the best-paid defender in the entire league at the start of the 2019/20 season.
International
For Sweden , Karlsson took part in the U18 World Junior Championship in 2008 and the U20 World Junior Championship in 2009 . He was honored as the best defender at both tournaments and was part of the All-Star team at the U20 Junior World Championship, which he concluded by winning the silver medal.
For the senior national team, the defender made his debut at the 2010 World Cup in Germany, which the Swedes finished with bronze. Another assignment followed at the 2012 World Cup . In February 2014 he won the silver medal with the national team at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia . Together with the American Phil Kessel, he got the most scorer points of all participating players, which again brought him the award for best defensive player and the election to the All-Star team. Furthermore, he represented his home country at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 , where he achieved third place with the team.
