Viktor Stålberg (born January 17, 1986 in Gothenburg ) is a Swedish ice hockey player who has been under contract with Friborg-Gottéron in the National League since May 2019 .
Career
Viktor Stålberg began his career as an ice hockey player in the junior division of IF Mölndal Hockey , for whose first team he made his debut in the fourth class Division 2 in the 2003/04 season . With the team, the attacker rose straight away to Division 1 , in which he spent the entire 2005/06 season, before he ran up for the U20 juniors of Frölunda HC from the Elitserien the following year . In the 2006 NHL Entry Draft , Stålberg was selected in the sixth round as a total of 161 players by the Toronto Maple Leafs , but spent the following three seasons in the team of the University of Vermont .
Before the 2009/10 season , the Swede received a two-year contract with the Maple Leafs. On October 1, 2009, the left-shooter made his debut for Toronto in the National Hockey League at the start of the season in the game against the Montréal Canadiens . He was also used by the Toronto Marlies , the Leafs' farm team, in the AHL. On June 30, 2010, Stålberg was given in a transfer deal to the Chicago Blackhawks .
In July 2013, the Swede signed a four-year deal worth $ 12 million with the Nashville Predators . After this was ended prematurely by the Predators in July 2015 (buy-out ), Stålberg joined the New York Rangers . After his one-year contract there expired, he signed one with the Carolina Hurricanes in July 2016 . The Hurricanes, however, handed the attacker over to the Ottawa Senators in February 2017 and in return received a third-round vote for the 2017 NHL Entry Draft .
The Swede ended the 2016/17 season in Ottawa, but did not receive a further contract there. He then returned to Europe and signed a two-year contract with EV Zug from the Swiss National League in July 2017 . At the end of October 2018 Stålberg moved to HK Awangard Omsk in the Continental Hockey League and reached the final of the Gagarin Cup with Awangard , in which Awangard was defeated by HK CSKA Moscow . He then returned to Switzerland when he signed a contract with Friborg-Gottéron .
On an international level, he made his debut for the Swedish national team at the 2012 World Cup .
