Reto Berra (born January 3, 1987 in Bülach ) is a Swiss ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with Friborg-Gottéron in the National League since 2018 .

Career

Reto Berra began his career at EHC Bülach until he switched to the Elite A-Juniors of the ZSC Lions and the juniors of the GCK Lions after the novices . In the 2003/04 season he made his debut in National League B for the GCK Lions and also played for their junior and professional team in the following years. In the 2005/06 season he was back-up from Ari Sulander in the National League A , but also came back to appearances in the NLB. In the 2006 NHL Entry Draft , Berra was selected by the St. Louis Blues in the fourth round as 106th. In the following season Berra was initially back-up at the ZSC and completed two NLA games in 33 missions. He also played 19 games in the NLB for the GCK Lions and had three appearances in the Swiss U20 national team . In the play-offs Ari Sulander was injured, so that Reto Berra was used in four more NLA games.

After the ZSC Lions extended the contract with Sulander in the summer of 2007, Berra decided to move to HC Davos, where goalkeeper Jonas Hiller was about to leave for the NHL . In Davos he formed the goalkeeper duo with Leonardo Genoni , but could not prevail against Genoni. Therefore, in October 2008, he was loaned to SCL Tigers and later to EV Zug . At the beginning of 2009 he returned to the Davos squad, but only made a few appearances. Therefore, after winning the championship with the HCD , he decided to change and signed a contract with EHC Biel . At EHC Biel, he developed into one of the best Swiss goalkeepers over the next four seasons and thus came into the focus of the National Hockey League . On April 1, the Calgary Flames secured the NHL rights to Berra as part of an exchange deal and signed him a few days later for a year.

At the beginning of the 2013/14 season, Berra first played for the Flames' farm team , the Abbotsford Heat , in the American Hockey League . On November 3, 2013 Reto Berra made his debut in the NHL in the goal of the Calgary Flames against the Chicago Blackhawks , who were defeated 3-2 after overtime. Shortly before the 2014 Trade Deadline , it was given to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for a second-round vote .

After a little more than two years in the organization of the Avalanche, Berra switched to the Florida Panthers in June 2016 in exchange for Rocco Grimaldi .

In April 2017 Berra signed a three-year contract with Friborg-Gottéron . Via an exit clause, however, the Swiss moved back to the NHL in July 2017 to the Anaheim Ducks , with whom he received a one-year contract. The remaining two contract years in Friborg remain unaffected and remain valid. In the months that followed, Berra was mainly used by the Ducks farm team, the San Diego Gulls , and therefore returned to Gottéron for the 2018/19 season.

International

Reto Berra has been used several times in the youth national teams of Switzerland. He completed his first major tournament in 2005 at the U18 World Cup . At both the 2006 World Cup and the 2007 World Cup , he was the goalkeeper of the U20 national team and played a key role in keeping Switzerland in the A group.

Berra completed his first men's world championship in 2012 . At the 2013 World Cup in Stockholm and Helsinki he was again part of the national team and won the silver medal with it. The goalkeeper repeated this success at the 2018 World Cup in Denmark . He also took part in the 2014 Winter Olympics and the 2014 , 2015 and 2016 World Championships .
