Leonardo Genoni (born August 28, 1987 in Semione ) is a Swiss ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with EV Zug in the National League since the 2019/20 season .

Career

Leonardo Genoni began his career with the GCK Lions and played for its elite A-Juniors and for the juniors of the GCK Lions. In the 2003/04 season he made his debut in National League A for the ZSC Lions, as well as his National League B debut for partner club GCK Lions.

In the following three seasons he was used either in the NLB with the GCK Lions or with the ZSC Lions in the NLA. In the 2006/07 season he also played three games for the Swiss U20 national team in the NLB. After he had contested the 2006 Spengler Cup for HC Davos , he signed a contract in Davos in January 2007, where goalkeeper Jonas Hiller was about to leave for the NHL . At HCD he developed into a solid NLA goalkeeper within one season and was rewarded for this in October 2008 with the award for "Newcomer of the Year".

For the 2016/17 season, Genoni moved to SC Bern and was named the best goalkeeper in the NLA qualification in his first season for the city-based team. In addition, he won the fourth championship title with the team, according to the newspaper Der Bund he was "the life insurance of the Bernese and the most important part of the master's puzzle". He also made a significant contribution to the renewed Bern championship title in 2019, even if he revealed weaknesses in the last and decisive game of the season against his future employer Zug. In August 2018, Genoni had already signed a five-year contract with EV Zug , which will apply from the 2019/20 season .

International

Leonardo Genoni has been used several times in the youth national teams of Switzerland. He completed his first major tournament in 2004 at the U18 World Cup in group B, where the Swiss juniors made it to the A group. A year later he was in the Swiss squad for both the U18 and the U20 World Cup. At the U20 World Cup in 2006 , he and Reto Berra formed the goalkeeper duo of the Swiss national team. He also convinced in his international debut, which he played in a 1-0 win over Germany on November 8, 2008 , when he was immediately able to record a shutout .
