In the top division, the four best teams in each group qualify directly for the quarter-finals. The total number of games is 64 games.

In Divisions I and II, the twelve teams are divided qualitatively into two groups of six teams. This is done on the basis of the final placements of the World Championships in 2014 . Division III plays in a group of seven teams.

The last two of the two preliminary round groups are relegated from the top division to Division IA. For the same reason, the first two will be promoted to the top division next year, while the sixth placed will be relegated to the IB division. In return, the winner of Division IB moves up to Division IA. The last one from Division IB is also relegated to Division II A. The promotion regulation of Division IB with one promoted and relegated also applies to Divisions II A and II B.

The 17-day world championship tournament was divided into two phases - the preliminary round and the final round.

The 16 teams were playing on their world rankings placing first in two groups of eight teams, a preliminary round ( Preliminary Round ). Three points were awarded for a win after normal playing time of 60 minutes, two for a win in the five-minute extra time or in the penalty shootout and one point for a defeat in the extra time or in the penalty shootout. In the event of a tie between two teams, the direct comparison decided. If more than two teams were tied, the following criteria were decisive:

  1. Number of points from matches between teams with the same points against each other
  2. better goal difference from the games against each other,
  3. Number of goals from the games against each other
  4. Points, goal difference and goals against the next-better, non-tied team (if possible),
  5. Results against the team that is better but not tied (if possible),
  6. Placement in the IIHF world rankings of 2014.

If, according to one of these criteria, only two teams were tied, the direct comparison decided again.

The four best teams in each preliminary group qualified for the quarter-finals and played the medal winners in the knockout system with the following semi-finals and finals ( playoff round ). The nations on the bottom of the respective group were relegated to Division IA. Since Russia was set to host the 2016 World Cup, the penultimate nation of the two groups with the worse record would have been relegated if Russia were relegated.

The Group A tournament was held from April 19-25, 2015 in the Polish city of Krakow . The games took place in the 14,496-seat Kraków Arena . A total of 66,651 spectators attended the 15 tournament games, which corresponds to an average attendance of 4,443 per game.

Initially, the organization was awarded to the Ice Hockey Federation of Ukraine . The games were to be played in the Druzhba Sports Palace in the Ukrainian city of Donetsk, which could hold 4,130 spectators . Due to the uncertain political situation in the country, the Ukrainians decided in August 2014 to give up the orientation.

The Kazakh selection secured immediate promotion back to the top division in their fourth game with a 3-2 win against Poland , which the Asians could no longer catch up with. Last year's relegated Italy, on the other hand, gambled away on the same match day with a 2: 3 defeat against the previously pointless Japanese the last chance to return to the ice hockey upper house and in the end only finished 5th. Japan was finally able to defeat 3: 1. Success over the Ukraine secure relegation, while the Eastern Europeans relegated to the B group after two years. In the last game of the tournament, Hungary beat the hosts from Poland 2-1 and celebrated their return to the elite league after relegation in 2009.

The tournament of Division III was from 3 to 12 April 2015 in the Turkish Izmir discharged. The games took place in Bornova Buz Sporları Salonu with a capacity of 1,751 . In addition to last year's relegated team and host Turkey and the five remaining teams from last year, a selection of Bosnia-Herzegovina also took part for the first time . The team from the Balkan state lost all six games significantly and only a third could be won in the 2: 5 against the United Arab Emirates . At the top, Turkey and the second of the three years 2012 to 2014 North Korea fought the expected duel for promotion to Division II. Both teams showed no nakedness in the first five games, even if Turkey in the penultimate game against Luxembourg was back five minutes before the end of the game. The decision was not made until the final game was overtaken, when the East Asians scored the 4-3 winning goal eleven seconds before the end through Hong Chun-rim's tenth goal, with whom he was also the sole top scorer of the tournament, after three unsuccessful attempts reached the ascent. A total of 7,955 spectators attended the 21 tournament games. The decisive group game between Turkey and North Korea alone accounted for more than a quarter of the total number of spectators.
