Joonas Kemppainen (born April 7, 1988 in Kajaani ) is a Finnish ice hockey player who has played in the center's position at SKA Saint Petersburg in the Continental Hockey League since May 2019 .
Career
Kemppainen learned to play ice hockey in the offspring of Hokki Kajaani , where he played up to the C-Juniors in summer 2004. Then at the age of 16 he moved to Ässät Pori's youth department . There the striker was able to earn a regular place in the A-Junior team in his first year as a B-Junior. In the course of the 2006/07 season he finally made his debut in the first men's team Poris in the SM-liiga and completed 43 games in the Finnish top division. He also played three appearances for the Finnish U20 team in the second-rate Mestis . Nevertheless, Kemppainen belonged to the squad of the A-junior team of Ässät Pori until the end of the 2007/08 season, with which he was Finnish runner-up.
After four years with Ässät Pori, the center forward left the club and moved to league rivals HPK Hämeenlinna in summer 2008 . The 20-year-old was a regular player right away and played 132 games in two years. He also reached the Finnish runner- up with the team at the end of the 2009/10 season . In the final series, HPK lost to future champions TPS Turku after games with 1: 4. Kemppainen then moved to Kärpät Oulu . After three years in which he only played a subordinate role and his qualities as a defensive striker were in demand, he took on a more offensive role in the team at the beginning of the 2013/14 season and set a new personal record with 31 scorer points in the main round. The season was crowned by winning the Finnish championship title . In the following season he improved in the main round to 32 scorer points. However, this was dwarfed by his performance in the play-offs . With 24 points in 19 games, he was the top scorer of the play-offs and, together with Joonas Donskoi, played a key role in successfully defending the championship title.
Following his success in the domestic league, Kemppainen decided to take the next step in his career and in May 2015 accepted an offer from the Boston Bruins from the National Hockey League . The attacker then moved to North America for a year and played during the season for both Boston in the NHL and their farm team , the Providence Bruins , in the American Hockey League . In the Boston Bruins franchise , Kemppainen's defensive qualities were in greater demand again. He completed 44 games for Boston, in which he only collected five scorer points. He achieved just as many in eleven meetings for Providence. However, his time in North America ended after just one year of play. The Finn was drawn back to Europe, where he signed a contract with HK Sibir Novosibirsk from the Continental Hockey League in May 2016 . There he played all 60 games of the main round during the season.
Between 2017 and 2019 he played for Salawat Julajew Ufa before moving to SKA Saint Petersburg within the KHL in May 2019 .
International
For his home country, Kemppainen played in the junior division at the U18 World Junior Championships in 2005 in the Czech Republic and in 2006 in Sweden . After he had no points at the tournament in the Czech Republic and the Finns finished the tournament in seventh place beyond the medal ranks, he was able to contribute two scorer points to winning the silver medal the following year. In the final, Finland lost 3-1 to the United States. Two years later, the center forward took part in the U20 World Junior Championship in 2008 in the Czech Republic. Despite his three scorer points, the Finns did not get beyond sixth place in the final ranking.
Kemppainen made his debut for the men's national team as part of the Euro Hockey Tour . There he came to appearances for the first time in the 2009/10 season and was regularly employed in the national jersey until the 2014/15 season . His first international tournament was the 2015 World Cup in the Czech Republic. With nine scorer points in eight missions, he was one of the most successful players in the Scandinavian team in the course of the tournament and was later named one of the three best Finns in the competition. Ultimately, Finland came in sixth. In the 2016/17 season , the attacker was back in the Finnish squad for the Euro Hockey Tour after a year break due to his stay in North America.
