Magnus Hellberg (born April 4, 1991 in Uppsala ) is a Swedish ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with SKA Saint Petersburg in the Continental Hockey League since May 2018 . With the Swedish national team , he won the gold medal at the 2018 World Cup .

Career

Hellberg spent his junior years in the offspring of Almtuna IS and the Wings HC Arlanda . He made his debut for Arlanda in the third division Division 1 during the 2008/09 season . The goalkeeper then moved back to his home club in Almtuna in summer 2009. There he spent the 2009/10 season in the J20 SuperElit and only played one game on loan for Vallentuna BK in Division 1. For the 2010/11 season , the rookie finally secured the regular place in the goal of Almtuna's first team in the HockeyAllsvenskan , whereupon he received a contract offer from Frölunda HC from the Elitserien and was also selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2011 in the second round in 38th position by the Nashville Predators from the National Hockey League . He was the first goalkeeper drawn in that year's draft.

After a year at Frölunda in Gothenburg , where he acted as a substitute for the team behind Frederik Andersen in 17 games, Hellberg moved to North America. There he signed a three-year contract in June 2012. Over the course of three years, the Swede played mainly for Nashville's farm team Milwaukee Admirals in the American Hockey League , but also came to appearances for the Cincinnati Cyclones in the ECHL . In the 2013/14 and 2015/16 seasons, he only completed two short appearances for a total of 32 minutes for the Predators themselves . After Nashville did not renew the expiring contract in the summer of 2015, the goalkeeper moved to the New York Rangers as a free agent . There he was in the squad of the farm team Hartford Wolf Pack in the AHL in the 2016/17 season .

On April 11, 2017, Hellberg made his debut as the Rangers starting goalie against the Pittsburgh Penguins , sustaining 22 of 24 shots on goal and thus achieving his first victory in the NHL. In the summer of 2017, Hellberg became a free agent and, due to a lack of offers from the NHL, decided to join the KHL when he signed a one-year contract with the Chinese participant Kunlun Red Star . At Red Star he showed very good goalkeeping performances and was therefore also nominated for the 2018 Winter Olympics and the 2018 World Cup . He was then signed by SKA Saint Petersburg in May 2018 , and Kunlun Red Star received financial compensation in return.

International

At the international level, Hellberg gained his first experience with the Swedish national team at the 2018 Winter Olympics , but remained behind Viktor Fasth and Jhonas Enroth without commitment. As part of the 2018 World Cup , he finally played for the Tre Kronor for the first time and promptly won the gold medal with the team.
