Eduard Kaiser (born January 19, 1813 in Weisweil , † June 16, 1903 in Lörrach ) was a German doctor and member of the Second Chamber of the Baden Estates Assembly , whose memoirs are of contemporary interest, especially for the time of the Baden Revolution .

family

Kaiser was a son of the country surgeon Johann Friedrich Kaiser († 1846) and his wife Frederike geb. Autenrieth († 1854). Kaiser married Albertine Irion († 1851) in 1837 with whom he had the following children:

  • Albertine (1838–1935) ⚭ Karl Ranzenberger (1830–1909)
  • NN (1839-1839)
  • Eduard Albert (1841–1844)
  • Maria (1845–1847)

The history and battle painter Friedrich Kaiser was a younger brother of Eduard Kaiser.

Life

In 1814 the father was appointed by the grand ducal administration as a country surgeon in Lörrach, where Kaiser grew up and attended elementary school and, from 1821, the pedagogy . Kaiser began studying medicine at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg as early as 1828 . During his studies he became a member of the Corps Allemannia Freiburg in 1830 and of the Freiburg fraternity Germania in 1832 . In Freiburg he also frequented Karl von Rotteck's house . In 1833 he passed the state examination in Karlsruhe and in 1834 went to Paris for six months for further training , where he also attended La Fayette with Rotteck's recommendation . After his return he settled as a general practitioner in Loerrach. In the critical years before and during the Baden Revolution, he was hostile to both conservative and revolutionary sides because of his independent mindset. In 1850 he became a member of the Second Chamber of the Baden Estates Assembly in the electoral district of the Lörrach Office (A9) for the sessions of the 14th Ordinary State Parliament. He did not run for the next election, but remained connected to politics through his personal relationship with Karl Mathy .

Publication of memoirs

At the urging of his friend Franz von Roggenbach, Kaiser wrote his memoirs in the mid-1870s and gave him his notes. In 1907, shortly before his death, Roggenbach gave the manuscript to Albertine Ranzenberger, the daughter of Eduard Kaiser. This left the records in 1910 in the Lörracher Verlag Gutsch under the title From old days - Memoirs of a Markgräfler 1815-1875. publish for the first time. Only a few footnotes were added to the manuscript. In 1981 the Friedrich Resin publishing house in Weil am Rhein published a reprint in Gothic script , which was expanded to include a comprehensive list of people and illustrations. In 1994 a new edition of the reprint was published by the Resin publishing house in antiqua script .

The editions of the memoirs are as follows:
