Albert Johann Georg Krieger (born April 17, 1861 in Gaggenau ; † August 8, 1927 in Karlsruhe ) was an archivist and historian from Baden .

Life

From 1881 to 1884, Krieger studied history and German at the University of Heidelberg . He completed his doctorate in Heidelberg in 1886 with Bernhard Erdmannsdörffer with a dissertation on the importance of the 4th book of Coccinius' writing "de bellis Italicis" for the history of Emperor Maximilian I.

In 1885, Krieger took up a position at the General State Archives in Karlsruhe and began working on the topographic dictionary of the Grand Duchy of Baden designed by the Baden Historical Commission , with Krieger significantly expanding the concept. A standard work was created, the first deliveries of which were published in 1893 and completed in 1898. In 1904 the second, revised and significantly expanded edition followed in two volumes at Carl Winter's university bookstore in Heidelberg. It is considered Kriegers main work. In addition, Krieger edited the 4th volume of the regests of the Margraves of Baden and Hachberg 1050–1515.

Between 1897 and 1908 a number of articles from the hand of Kriegers appeared in the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie .

When he was appointed secret archives councilor at the General State Archives in Karlsruhe in 1906 , he also took on the role of secretary of the Baden Historical Commission , which he held until 1927.

In 1900, together with Friedrich von Weech , he was commissioned by the Baden Historical Commission to publish a fifth volume of the Baden Biographies , which was conceived as a necrology for the years 1891 to 1901. In 1914 he was commissioned to prepare the 6th volume in this series. Due to the First World War and the subsequent lack of financial resources, the publication of the first parts was not started until 1927 and was then interrupted by the death of Kriegers. The 6th volume was completed by 1935 under the direction of Karl Obser (Nekrolog 1901 to 1910).

From 1924 to 1927, Krieger was the successor to Karl Obser as editor of the magazine for the history of the Upper Rhine (ZGO).
