Karl Obser

Karl Joseph Obser (born January 16, 1860 in Karlsruhe ; † January 21, 1944 there ) was a German historian and archivist. From 1906 to 1924 he was director of the General State Archives in Karlsruhe .

Life

After attending grammar school in Karlsruhe, he studied law, history and German at the universities of Heidelberg and Munich from 1879 to 1883. In 1883 he received his doctorate. In 1888 he became a full member of the Baden Historical Commission, for which he had been active since 1883. In 1888 he was employed, initially as an archive assessor, at the General State Archives in Karlsruhe, which he took over in 1906. In 1909 he became a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences. In the same year the obser, who grew up as a Catholic and who politically opposed the Catholic center, joined the Protestant Church.

From 1897 to 1924 he was in charge of editing the magazine for the history of the Upper Rhine (ZGO), for which he also wrote numerous articles.

His estate is in the General State Archives in Karlsruhe.
