Viktor Fasth (born August 8, 1982 in Kalix ) is a Swedish ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with Växjö Lakers HC in the Svenska Hockeyligan again since May 2017 . He is also the goalkeeper of the Swedish national ice hockey team and became world champion with them in 2017 .
Career
Viktor Fasth was in the 2000/01 season for the Brooklyn Tigers in Division 2, the fourth-highest Swedish division, on the ice. For the following season, the goalkeeper was signed by third division club Vänersborgs HC . He left this after a season to play for the Tvåstad Cobras . With the club he was promoted to Division 1 in his first season. After the 2003/04 season, however, the club withdrew from the Swedish third division, as the financial situation had deteriorated accordingly. Fasth stayed in Division 1 after accepting a contract offer from Tingsryd's AIF . After not convincing in the 2004/05 season with a catch rate of 87.1 percent in his 16 missions, he was used more often in the following season and formed a goalkeeping duo with Oskar Fransson, who both took turns guarding the goal of Tingsryd's AIF . In the course of the 2006/07 season Fasth showed his potential for the first time and finally prevailed as a regular goalkeeper. In the regular season he came in 39 missions in Division 1 to a catch quota of 92.4 percent and achieved a goal average of 2.22. In the same season Fasth took part with the club in the Kvalserien for promotion to the HockeyAllsvenskan , which, however, was not achieved.
Although the promotion was missed, the Swede played a league level higher in the 2007/08 season than in the previous season, as he had agreed on a contract with the second division club Växjö Lakers HC . There he prevailed against Tuomo Karjalainen for the post of goalkeeper. In the 2008/09 season he came to only nine missions for the Växjö Lakers due to injury. In the following season Fasth formed a duo with Oscar Alsenfelt . Fasth ended the 2009/10 regular season with a catch quota of 93 percent, the best value in the HockeyAllsvenskan, and then took part in the Kvalserien with the club. In these, the possible promotion to the elite series was missed. For the 2010/11 season , the goalkeeper received a contract with AIK Solna . Even in the top division, he quickly established himself as one of the best goalkeepers and was placed in the goal of the AIK, despite the competition from the experienced Finn Vesa Toskala . Fasth parried 92.5 percent of the shots in his debut season and finished third in the Elitserien in that category.
With his performance, he played a key role in ensuring that AIK reached the play-offs in the top Swedish league for the first time since 2001 . In the semi-finals, the team was defeated by the eventual champions Färjestad BK despite the excellent performance of the goalkeeper with a sweep . After the end of the season, his achievements were recognized accordingly and Fasth was awarded the Honkens trofé as the best goalkeeper of the year and the gold puck as the best Swedish player of the year. The goalkeeper also continued his consistently convincing performances in the domestic Elitserien in the 2011/12 season, in which Fasth reached the semi-finals of the finals with AIK and was named the best goalkeeper of the year for the second time in a row with the Honkens trofé. As a result, the Swede recommended himself to be involved in the National Hockey League and signed a contract for the 2012/13 season with the Anaheim Ducks in May 2012 .
The Swedish national goalkeeper first spent the NHL lockout in the 2012/13 season with the Swedish second division club Tingsryds AIF , for whom Fasth stood between the posts in twelve games of HockeyAllsvenskan and achieved a catch rate of over 94 percent. He then made his debut on January 26, 2013 in the home game of the Anaheim Ducks against the Nashville Predators in the National Hockey League, where the goalkeeper parried 19 of 21 shots on goal and scored a victory in the shootout on his league debut. In his fourth NHL mission for the Californians, on February 6, 2013 away from the Colorado Avalanche , Fasth managed to fend off all 31 shots fired at his gate and record the first shutout of his career. In the following weeks he kept his performance at a consistently high level, so that Fasth became only the third goalkeeper in NHL history to win the first eight NHL games of his career. Only Ray Emery , who got nine wins at the beginning of his NHL career, has been more successful to date. In the same month, the Californians extended the contract with the goalkeeper, which was running out at the end of the season, by two seasons until the end of the 2014/15 season. During that time, Fasth is said to make a total of $ 5.8 million.
In March 2014 he was transferred to the Edmonton Oilers , who did not give him a new contract at the end of the season. He was then signed by HK CSKA Moscow in July 2015 . There he was second goalkeeper behind Ilya Sorokin for the next two years. In 2017 his contract with CSKA expired and Fasth returned to Växjö Lakers HC.
International
For Sweden Fasth took part in the 2011 World Cup, where he won the silver medal with the Swedish selection. Fasth, who completed an outstanding tournament despite conceding six goals in the final against Finland , was elected to the All-Star Team of the World Cup, named best goalkeeper and most valuable player of the tournament. In his seven missions he had a catch rate of 94.6 percent, an average goal against goal of 1.71 and achieved three shutouts . At the 2012 World Cup - held in his home country - Fasth was again the regular goalkeeper of the Swedish selection, but failed with the team to win the desired medal.
At the 2017 World Cup , he won the world title again with the Tre Kronor .
