Ilya Igorevich Sorokin ( Russian Илья Игоревич Сорокин ; English transcription: Ilya Igorevich Sorokin ; born August 4, 1995 in Novokuznetsk ) is a Russian ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the New York Islanders from the National Hockey League (NHL) since July 2020 . At the 2018 Winter Olympics , Sorokin won the gold medal with the Russian national team under a neutral flag .

Career

Ilya Sorokin began his career as a hockey player in the youth department of Metallurg Novokuznetsk . The goalkeeper was selected in the third round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft as the 78th player from the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League (NHL). In 2014 Sorokin went to HK CSKA Moscow from the Continental Hockey League (KHL).

After playing there for six years, during which time he won the Gagarin Cup with CSKA in 2019 and became one of the best goalkeepers outside the NHL, he signed a contract with the New York Islanders in July 2020.

International

For Russia , Sorokin took part in the junior division of the 2015 U20 World Junior Championship and won the silver medal with his team. At the 2016 World Cup , he and his team won the bronze medal. In 2017 Sorokin won the bronze medal again, where he played in the game against Latvia and was able to book a shutout for himself. He then represented his home country under a neutral flag at the 2018 Winter Olympics and won the gold medal there.
