Participants, venues and periods

Bosnia and HerzegovinaBosnia and Herzegovina Bosnia and Herzegovina withdrew its participation shortly before the start of the Division III tournament.

mode

In the top division, the four best teams in each group qualified directly for the quarter-finals. The total number of games was 64 games.

In divisions I and II, the twelve teams were divided qualitatively into two groups of six teams. This was done on the basis of the final placements of the World Championships in 2016 . Division III played (as an exception) at one venue in two groups of four teams each.

The last two of the two preliminary round groups were relegated from the top division to Division IA. For the same reason, the two first place winners will be promoted to the top division next year, while the sixth place winners will be relegated to the IB division. In return, the winner of Division IB rose to Division IA. The last one from Division IB was also relegated to Division II A. The promotion regulation of Division IB with one promoted and relegated also applied to Divisions II A and II B.

The 81st men's ice hockey world championship took place between May 5th and 21st, 2017 in Germany and France . The venues were the Lanxess Arena in Cologne and the AccorHotels Arena in Paris .

The first independent World Cup in 1930 was held in France and Germany, after the tournament, which was originally held in Chamonix , was canceled after a drop in heat and continued in Berlin .

The main host Germany was automatically qualified for the tournament. Since Germany was also athletically qualified as seventh in the 2016 World Cup, the host starting position would have been given to France, which had also qualified as fourteenth in the previous year's World Cup.

The logo of the World Cup is reminiscent of the deceased national goalkeeper Robert Müller .

Award

The IIHF had two applications for the event, each of which provided for tournaments in two countries: Denmark and Latvia with the host cities Copenhagen and Riga, and Germany and France with Cologne and Paris . All four countries originally submitted individual applications. Germany and France announced in January 2012 that they would host the 2017 World Cup together, while Denmark and Latvia merged the applications in November 2012. The International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF decided in September 2012 to also allow joint applications from two countries after the 2012 World Cup in Finland and Sweden had already been held together. The final decision on the host was made on May 17, 2013 at the annual congress of the International Ice Hockey Federation in Stockholm . 63 delegates voted for Germany / France and 45 for Denmark / Latvia.

Break show in the Lanxess Arena

For Denmark it would have been the first ice hockey world championship. The Danes had already applied for the 2016 World Cup , but withdrew their application shortly before the vote. Germany last hosted the World Cup in 2010 , Latvia last hosted it in 2006 . The last World Cup in France took place in 1968 as part of the Winter Olympics in Grenoble .

The Swedish team celebrates winning the title

The final round began after the preliminary round on May 18, 2017, so that all teams had at least one day off. Two of the quarter-finals will be played in the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, the other two in the AccorHotels Arena in Paris. As in the previous year, the games took place in a cross comparison of the two preliminary round groups. Only in the event that Germany and France would have met directly, would the quarter-finals have been held within the group. From the semi-finals on May 20th, all matches were played in Cologne. The final and the bronze match were scheduled for May 21st.

The Group A tournament was held from April 22nd to 28th, 2017 in the Ukrainian capital Kiev . The games took place in the city's 7,000-seat sports palace . A total of 51,851 spectators attended the 15 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 3,456 per game.

As in previous years, the Group A tournament of Division I presented itself as a sportily balanced tournament. Neither team remained undefeated in the course of the tournament, nor did a team remain without any point gains. After two years of membership in Division IA, the team from Austria and, for the first time in its history, South Korea secured promotion to the top division. The tournament started surprisingly for both of the later promoted teams. While the South Koreans were able to defeat last year's relegated Kazakhstan 5-2 on the second match day, the Austrians had lost their opening game against the same opponent the day before with 2: 3, which put their promotion ambitions down for the first time. However, Austria continued to improve in the further course of the tournament, clearly defeating the previous leaders South Korea 5-0 on the day of the advance and secured their return to the top on the last matchday with an 11-0 win over Poland, who also had opportunities for promotion. Division. Behind them came South Korea, which in the last tournament game against the designated relegated Ukraine in the penalty shoot-out earned the necessary two points for promotion. By winning in a direct comparison with Kazakhstan, South Korea rose to the top division for the first time and thus succeeded Japan as the first representative of East Asia in the top division since the 2004 World Cup .

In addition to Kazakhstan, Hungary, who had been relegated from the previous year, also missed direct re-promotion. The Hungarians were able to leave the ice as winners at the start against the hosts and newly promoted Ukraine, but then won no more game. The hosts from Ukraine could not use their home advantage during the entire tournament and were relegated again after the fourth match day. Only in the final tournament game did the team, which had to do without many of their top players due to the regulations of the Continental Hockey League and injuries, get their only point.

With one exception, the individual awards were made between the players from Austria and Kazakhstan. The Austrian Bernhard Starkbaum was honored as the best goalkeeper . After five missions, he had the lowest goals against goals , the highest catch rate and the most shutouts . He was also appointed to the All-Star Team. Another Austrian, Dominique Heinrich, secured the title of best defender and was appointed to the All-Star Team . Heinrich also had the best plus / minus balance of all players with +12 . The naturalized Kazakh Nigel Dawes was named the best striker . The native Canadian was leading in both categories with five goals and nine scorer points and found himself as part of the assault line in the All-Star team. This was supplemented by the Austrians Konstantin Komarek , who also collected nine points, and Thomas Raffl , the most valuable player of the tournament. The all-star team was completed by the naturalized South Korean Alex Plante in the defensive position. The Austrian Martin Schumnig collected the most assists in the tournament .

The group B tournament was held from April 23-29, 2017 in the Northern Irish capital Belfast . The games took place in the 9,957-seat SSE Arena . A total of 21,208 spectators attended the 15 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 1,413 per game.

Both the hosts from Great Britain and last year's relegated Japan confirmed their position as favorites from the first day of the tournament and remained victorious on the first four game days. So the last tournament game had to be used in a direct comparison of both teams to determine who was promoted to the A group of Division I. Ultimately, the British team clearly prevailed 4-0 and returned to Group A after four years of abstinence without losing points. While the East Asians took second place, the Baltic states of Lithuania and Estonia followed in the other places. In the relegation battle, the Netherlands had to accept the direct relegation to Division II after they had not won a point and had only scored six goals. The Croatians placed before had won the decisive direct duel on matchday three with 6-2.

In the individual awards, the Japanese Yutaka Fukufuji was named the best goalkeeper, the British Ben O'Connor as the best defender and Colin Shields as the best striker. The Japanese Daisuke Obara collected the most points . Among his ten points there were five goals, which made him the top scorer.

The Group B tournament was held from April 4 to 10, 2017 in the New Zealand city of Auckland . The games took place in the 400-seat Paradice Botany . A total of 3,229 spectators attended the 15 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 215 per game.

On the day of the advance, the team from the People's Republic of China secured immediate promotion back to Division IIA. The Asians kept themselves free of loss points during the tournament with five wins from five games and laid the foundation for the tournament victory on the second day of the tournament with a 5-2 victory over the hosts and later runners-up New Zealand. The relegation was decided before the last match day between three teams, each of which won once and thus entered the last day of the tournament tied on points. Since none of the three teams won a point, the direct comparison between the teams decided, so that ultimately Turkey had to accept relegation to Division III. The Turks had the worst goal difference in a three-way comparison with North Korea and Mexico.

The Division III tournament was held from April 10 to 16, 2017 in the Bulgarian capital Sofia . The games took place in the 4600-seat Winter Sports Palace. A total of 4,800 spectators attended the 15 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 320 per game.

Since the teams from the United Arab Emirates , which had canceled their participation at short notice last year, and the Republic of China (Taiwan) had two additional teams registered for Division III, the mode of the tournament was changed: the eight teams were reduced to two Divided into groups of four. While the first two teams each crossed the semifinals, in which the participants of the final and match for third place were determined, the third and fourth placed teams also played the participants in the placement games for fifth and seventh place crosswise.
A few days before the start of the tournament, the team from Bosnia and Herzegovina withdrew their participation in the tournament at short notice. The tournament format remained unaffected. All games of the team were rated with three points and 5-0 goals for the respective opponent.

In Group A, the hosts Bulgaria and the team from Hong Kong, who beat the newcomer Republic of China (Taiwan) in a direct duel, qualified for the final round in the preliminary round. In Group B, Luxembourg and Georgia made it to the semi-finals. There the two group winners Bulgaria and Luxembourg prevailed confidently and reached the final. After a balanced first third, in which the previous year’s relegated Bulgaria took the lead, Luxembourg finally won confidently and rose to Division II for the first time since the 2004 World Cup . Georgia secured third place and thus achieved its best World Cup placement. The co-favorite South Africa disappointed in fifth place. Bosnia and Herzegovina rose - subject to further sanctions due to the short-term withdrawal from the tournament - to qualify for Division III.
