Markus Hännikäinen (* 26. March 1993 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish ice hockey player who, since February 2020 the Arizona Coyotes in the National Hockey League is under contract and in parallel for their farm team, the Tucson Roadrunners , in the American Hockey League is used . Prior to that, he spent five years in the Columbus Blue Jackets organization .
Career
Markus Hännikäinen played for Kiekko-Tiikerit in his youth before moving to the youth department of Jokerit , which is also based in his hometown Helsinki. In the 2010/11 season, the left winger established himself in the club's U20 and ran for them in the Jr. A SM-liiga, the highest junior league in Finland. There he scored 19 points in 36 games in his rookie season and then represented his home country at the 2011 U18 World Cup , where he finished fifth with the team. In the following three years, Hännikäinen regularly commuted between the U20s of Jokerit, the A-squad of Jokerit from Liiga and Kiekko-Vantaa from the second-class Mestis , for whom he played on loan. In addition, Hämeenlinnan Pallokerho had four league appearances on loan in January 2014. During this period, he also took part in the 2012 and 2013 U20 World Championships with the Finnish U20 national team.
At the end of the 2013/14 season, Hännikäinen's contract in Helsinki ran out, so he joined league rivals JYP Jyväskylä in April 2014 . There the attacker made his breakthrough in the Liiga, he scored 46 points in 60 games and achieved a plus / minus statistic of +22, leading the league and thus receiving the Matti-Keinonen trophy . Through these achievements, teams from the National Hockey League (NHL) also became aware of him, so that he signed an entry level contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets in April 2015 , without having previously been considered in an NHL entry draft . With the start of the 2015/16 season, the Blue Jackets put the Finn on their farm team , the Lake Erie Monsters , in the American Hockey League (AHL). In November 2015, however, Hännikäinen was appointed to the NHL squad of Columbus for the first time and made his debut there. In total, he booked four appearances for the Blue Jackets in the season and won the AHL playoffs for the Calder Cup with the Lake Erie Monsters . In the 2016/17 season, the attacker will mainly be used in the AHL and occasionally in the NHL. In March 2017, Hännikäinen signed a new two-year contract with the Blue Jackets before making his debut for the Finnish senior team at the 2017 World Cup .
After five years in the organization of the Blue Jackets, the Finn was handed over to the Arizona Coyotes by the trade deadline in February 2020 in exchange for a conditional seven-round vote in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft . The right to vote should only change hands if Hännikäinen plays ten NHL games for the Coyotes.
