Mode changes

Comparison of the previous format (left) with the new regulation (right) based on the tournaments of the Men's World Cup

For the first time since the men's world championships in 2001 , the competitions were subjected to a far-reaching reform. The respective divisions retain their number of participants - the top division continues to play with ten teams, divisions I and II continue to play with twelve and division III with six - but the competition formats are changing fundamentally. The reason for the reform, which is also being introduced in the area of U20 and U18 juniors, is that, according to a study by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF, between 49 and 68 percent of all games in the 2010/11 season with five or more goals Difference ended.

In Divisions I and II, the twelve teams will continue to be divided into two groups of six teams. However, this no longer takes place on the basis of the world rankings, so that both groups are positioned as evenly as possible, but once on the basis of the final placements of the World Championships in 2011 . The six better-placed teams play in group A of the divisions in the first year, while group B contains the worse-placed teams. In the following years, the group composition is self-explanatory due to the promotion and relegation regulations.

Division III will continue to play in a group of six teams, with an optional qualification depending on the number of registered participants.

The mode changes also affect the promotion and relegation regulations of the individual divisions. From the top division only the last placed in the relegation round descends into division IA. For this reason, only the first placed rider will be promoted to the top division next year, while the sixth placed will be relegated to the IB division. In return, the winner of Division IB moves up to Division IA. The last one from Division IB is also relegated to Division II A. The promotion regulation of Division IB with a promoted and relegated team also applies to Division II A, and a team is promoted from Division II B. In contrast, two teams descend from Division II B and thus two teams from Division III. There is no direct relegation from Division III in this sense. Depending on a possible qualification for Division III, the last two teams placed in Division III of the previous year must compete with the newly registered national teams in the qualification in order to play the two free places.

The world championship title was secured by Sweden, who beat defending champions Russia 1-0 in the final with a goal in extra time . It was only the second title win for the Swedes and the first since 1981 . Since the introduction of the play-off format in 1996 , it was the first purely European meeting in a final game. Mika Zibanejad scored the winning goal for Sweden's first gold medal in 31 years in the eleventh minute of extra time. The host Canadians won the bronze medal with a 4-0 win over Finland. In the relegation round, promoted Denmark had to make their way back to Division IA, as they narrowly lost the decisive game against fellow promoted Latvia.

In the individual awards, the Russian Yevgeny Kuznetsov was the big winner. In addition to being elected to the tournament's All-Star Team, he was named Most Valuable Player and Best Striker and was also the tournament's top scorer. The Czech Petr Mrázek stood out among the goalkeepers .

The group B tournament was held from December 10-16, 2011 in Tallinn , Estonia . The games took place in the 750-seat Premia Jäähall . A total of 3,065 spectators attended the 15 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 204 per game.

Promotion to Division IIA was confidently secured by the team from Romania, which won all games by at least four goals. Even before the last day of the group, the Southeast Europeans had been confirmed as promoted teams, having clearly beaten their direct rivals from Estonia and the Serbs, who had just been promoted from Division III last year. The second Division III promoted Mexico emerged from the five game days as relegated. Despite a respectable success in the first game against Belgium, which the Central Americans only narrowly lost 3-2 in the penalty shoot-out, they lost 4-1 in the decisive game against Australia.

The Division III tournament was held from January 17-22, 2012 in Dunedin , New Zealand . The games took place in the 1,850-seat Ice Stadium . A total of 2,037 spectators attended the ten tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 203 per game.

The North Korean federation canceled the participation of its U20 selection on November 4, 2011, whereupon the tournament only took place with five instead of the planned six nations.

The team from Iceland confidently secured promotion to Division IIB, winning all games by at least four goals. Nevertheless, the Icelanders only secured promotion on the last match day in a direct duel against the People's Republic of China, which was relegated with the Northwest Europeans last year.
