Tomáš Jurčo (* 28. December 1992 in Košice , Czechoslovakia ) is a Slovak ice hockey player who since July 2019 with the Edmonton Oilers in the National Hockey League is under contract and in parallel for their farm team, the Bakersfield Condors , in the American Hockey League on the position of the right winger plays.
Career
Jurčo comes from the junior division of HC Košice , the club in his hometown. There he played permanently in the U18 junior team at the age of 15 and in the club's U20 selection at 16. The talent of the striker was not hidden from the scouts of the Canadian Hockey League and so he was selected in the first round in the first round of the 2009 CHL Import Draft by the Saint John Sea Dogs from the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec .
The attacker then immediately moved to North America to join the Sea Dogs, where he made his debut in the LHJMQ in the 2009/10 season . With 51 scorer points from 64 games, the rookie knew how to convince in the service of the league primus. In addition, Saint John also moved into the final series for the Coupe du Président , but where the Moncton Wildcats secured the championship title in six games. Jurčo got 17 points in 21 appearances. During the summer break, the striker was selected in the sixth round of the KHL Junior Draft 2010 in 141st position by Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg .
In the following season, the Saint John Sea Dogs dared a new attempt to win the first title in franchise history . Once again they were by far the best team of the regular season and lived up to their favorite position in the play-offs with 16 wins and only three defeats. Led by Jonathan Huberdeau , the Sea Dogs secured the Coupe du Président. Jurčo reached 56 points in 60 games and 18 more in 19 play-off games in the regular season. In the subsequent Memorial Cup 2011 , for which the team had qualified by winning the championship, Saint John also prevailed and won the prestigious Memorial Cup for the first time . The Slovak was the top scorer of the competition with four goals together with Matt Fraser from the Kootenay Ice . His achievements in the summer of 2011 meant that Jurčo was drawn in the second round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft in 35th place by the Detroit Red Wings . Despite participating in the Red Wings training camp in September, he stayed with the Saint John Sea Dogs in the LHJMQ.
In August 2012 Jurčo finally signed a three-year entry - level contract with the Detroit Red Wings. He then moved to their farm team , the Grand Rapids Griffins , in the American Hockey League . After he was used exclusively with the Griffins in the 2012/13 season, he already spent the 2013/14 season in approximately equal parts in the AHL and NHL before he joined the Red Wings' NHL squad at the beginning of the 2014/15 season could establish. In the summer of 2015, Detroit extended the contract for two years. A few months before the end of the same in February 2017, they transferred the Slovak for a third-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 2017 to the Chicago Blackhawks . He was active in Chicago until the end of the 2017/18 season when his expiring contract was not renewed.
The Slovak then only found a new employer in January 2019 in the Springfield Thunderbirds , which a month later gave him to the Charlotte Checkers in exchange for Cliff Pu . With the Checkers he won the Calder Cup for the second time in his career at the end of the season . He then managed to return to the NHL by signing a one-year contract with the Edmonton Oilers in July 2019 .
International
Jurčo represented Slovakia at the U18 World Junior Championships in 2009 and the U20 World Junior Championships in 2011 and 2012 . Both in 2009 and 2011, the Slovak had to compete with the team in the relegation round, but managed to stay in the league both times. In 2012 the Slovaks reached the quarter-finals of the U20 Junior World Championship.
At the U18 Junior World Championship in 2009 he reached five points and was together with Marek Hrivík the best point collector of the Slovaks. As part of the U20 Junior World Championship in 2012, he played in five of the six Slovak games. With eight points he was the team's top scorer and played a key role in Slovakia's sixth place. In the senior sector, he took part in the 2014 Winter Olympics and the 2015 , 2016 and 2018 World Championships .
