Matthew John Fraser (born May 20, 1990 in Red Deer , Alberta ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Augsburger Panthers from the German Ice Hockey League since April 2018 and plays for them in the position of the winger .
Career
Fraser first played for some lower-class junior teams in his hometown of Red Deer . There he began to play in the 2006/07 and 2007/08 seasons for the Red Deer Rebels in the Western Hockey League , before he was transferred to the Kootenay Ice league shortly after the start of the 2007/08 season . For the Ice, the winger played until the end of the 2010/11 season and won the Ed Chynoweth Cup with the team at the end of that season . Fraser had already been awarded the Doug Wickenheiser Memorial Trophy the previous year and had gained his first professional experience with the Peoria Rivermen in the American Hockey League .
Since the Dallas Stars from the National Hockey League had already secured the services of the undrafted Canadian for the beginning of the 2011/12 season in November 2010 , he moved to the Texas Stars farm team in the AHL after his junior career was over. There he spent the following two playing years, but was also used in 13 games for Dallas in the NHL. In July 2013, a year before his contract expired, Fraser was part of a seven-player transfer deal between his employer and the Boston Bruins . Together with Loui Eriksson , Reilly Smith and Joe Morrow , Fraser left the Texans, while Tyler Seguin , Rich Peverley and Ryan Button did the opposite. With the Bruins, Fraser could not earn a permanent place in the course of the 2013/14 season , but was used more regularly in the NHL. So his contract was extended in the summer and the attacker managed to play his way into the NHL squad before he was put on the waiver list. From there, the Edmonton Oilers selected him , so he changed teams again shortly before the turn of the year in December 2015. With the Oilers he ended the season.
The Oilers did not extend Fraser's contract, which was about to expire, which meant that he switched to the Winnipeg Jets as a free agent . There he lost his regular place in the NHL, which he had earned in the preseason, and was only used in the AHL for the Manitoba Moose . Another transfer in February 2016, when he joined the Chicago Blackhawks with Andrew Ladd and Jay Harrison , brought him to his fourth franchise within 14 months. In return, Marko Daňo moved to Winnipeg with a first-round right to vote in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft and a conditional third-round right to vote in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft , which, however, was not fulfilled. Fraser finished playing on the Rockford IceHogs farm team .
After he had not managed to establish himself permanently in the NHL in the previous five years and was again considered a free agent, he moved to Europe in September 2016 , where he signed a contract with Rögle BK from the Svenska Hockeyligan . There he failed until 2017 due to an inflammation in his knee. He then moved to Dornbirner EC in the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga (EBEL) for the 2017/18 season , which he left after one season and went to the Augsburg Panthers from the German Ice Hockey League .
