The 2020/21 DEL season was the 27th season of the German Ice Hockey League , the highest league in German ice hockey . Originally, it was supposed to start on September 18, 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated restrictions, especially in viewer numbers , the start date has been postponed twice. Finally, the season kick-off took place on December 17, 2020. The main round ended on April 18, 2021. The play-offs began on April 20 and ended with the third of three possible play-off finals on May 7, 2021. The German championship was won by the Eisbären Berlinby a 2-1 series win in the play-off final against the Grizzlys Wolfsburg .

Due to sponsorship, the league introduced a new logo and changed its official name to "PENNY DEL". As in previous years, the DEL games will be broadcast by Magenta Sport and Sport 1 .

In the run-up to the season, eight DEL teams played the Magenta Sport Cup sponsored by streaming partner Deutsche Telekom from November 11 to December 12, 2020 . This was won by EHC Red Bull Munich .

Attendees

All 14 clubs of the 2019/20 DEL season as well as the second division Löwen Frankfurt had applied for a license. On July 9, 2020, the DEL announced that all preseason participants will receive a license. Frankfurt would only have come into play if one of the previous clubs had not received a license.

The teams were divided into two regional groups, north and south.

Eight teams took part in the Magenta Sport Cup, divided into two groups:

The teams in each group played a round trip. The games took place from November 11th to December 8th, 2020, with one game scheduled each day (with the exception of Mondays). The top two teams in each group qualified for the semi-finals. The final was scheduled for December 13th.

Schwenningen and Berlin were eliminated from the competition due to positive Covid19 test results. Mannheim took Schwenningen's place in the semifinals.

Main round

Due to the delayed start, the main round was shortened. The 14 clubs are divided into two regional groups with seven teams each. Within the group, the teams play a double round (twice a home and return game), while the teams in the other group play a single round (a return game). This means that each team will play 38 games instead of the 52 games usual in previous years. The best four teams in each group qualify for the play-offs.

Play-offs

The quarter-finals will be held within the group in best-of-three mode. The semifinals take place crosswise and - like the final - are also played in the best-of-three.

Promotion to the DEL

For the first time since 2006 , the DEL should play off a relegated athlete, who should be replaced by the master of the DEL2 , subject to an economic test . Due to the pandemic situation, the leagues agreed to forego relegation from the DEL, but to allow the DEL2 champion to advance, provided the DEL2 season is played regularly. If the DEL2 master passes the commercial license exam, the DEL 2021/22 could be held with 15 teams. The Löwen Frankfurt , the Kassel Huskies and the Bietigheim Steelers have applied for the license test .

¹The game between the Krefeld Pinguine and ERC Ingolstadt originally ended 5-6. However, it was subsequently rated 0: 5 because Krefeld used a player who was not on the game report at the beginning of the game.

²The game Straubing Tigers against Iserlohn Roosters could not take place as originally planned on 04/04/2021. The reason for the rejection was a positive corona test in the Iserlohn Roosters team with subsequent quarantine for the entire team. After no suitable alternative date could be found before the end of the main round, the game was finally canceled. Straubing and Iserlohn ended the main round with one game less.

Main round table

A team was awarded three points for a win after normal playing time, if the game was tied after 60 minutes, both teams received one point, the winner of the five-minute extra time (only with three against three outfield players) or after a necessary penalty shoot-out received another point credited. If a team lost in regular time, they received no points.
