Magenta Sport (until 2019 "Telekom Sport") is a pay-TV service from Deutsche Telekom for various German and international sports leagues in the fields of basketball , football and ice hockey . The offer started in 2014 under the name Telekom Basketball , when Telekom acquired multi-year broadcasting rights for the games of the German basketball league . The games can be followed live or on demand via MagentaTV or in a browser or app on a tablet or smartphone.

history

In the 2014/15 season, Deutsche Telekom acquired all national and international audiovisual exploitation rights to the basketball Bundesliga up to and including the 2017/18 season. Before that, Telekom had been involved in German basketball for a long time as a sponsor of Telekom Baskets Bonn . In its first season, Telekom Basketball had over 80,000 subscribers and a total of 4.1 million viewers were reached.

Since the 2015/16 season, all EuroLeague games with German participation as well as the Final Four of the EuroLeague have been broadcast on Telekom Basketball . In addition, broadcasting rights were acquired for NBA Sunday games for the 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons (45 live games per season). The Telekombasketball.de online portal was also expanded. In addition to the videos, there are now also preliminary reports, analyzes and columns. There will also be reports on the EuroLeague, the EuroCup, the NBA and German players abroad. Former national player Henrik Rödl has been won over as a new expert for the editorial team . In the second year, almost six million viewers on Telekom Basketball followed the total of 339 games in the 2015/16 Basketball Bundesliga .

For the 2016/17 season, the offer was expanded to include the transmission of games from the German Ice Hockey League ( Telekom Ice Hockey ). At Telekom Basketball , in addition to the EuroLeague games with German champion Brose Bamberg , the EuroCup games with German participation were shown in the 2016/17 season .

For the 2017/18 season, the offer was expanded and renamed Telekom Sport . New additions include a. the 3rd men's soccer league and the women's Bundesliga . Basketball games from the NBA will no longer be broadcast. Telekom Sport shows the games of the German national basketball team .

In January 2019 the offer was renamed "Magenta Sport" and the program was expanded to include some live conferences from the Sky program .

The reporting usually starts 15 minutes before the start of the game. During this time, important players ("key players") are introduced and interviews with the coaches are shown. During the half-time break, summaries of other games from the past few days ("Game Report") or the current top 10 of the week are often shown. After the game, one player from each of the teams involved will be interviewed.

Bundesliga basketball matches and home games for German teams in the EuroCup are usually commented and moderated by one person on site. For top games and home games in the EuroLeague, a moderator and a commentator or, alternatively, an expert, e.g. B. former player or coach, on site. In some cases, the preliminary reporting is extended to 30 minutes. Away games in European competitions are not commented on on site, but in the studio.

From 2014 to 2016 U.COM Media from Düsseldorf was the production service provider responsible for the live productions of the Bundesliga games. The games were filmed with at least four and up to six cameras. In 2016 thinXpool TV from Holzkirchen took over the production, which had been editorially responsible for the format since 2014.

editorial staff

The editorial team includes commentators Frank Buschmann and Michael Körner , who were responsible for basketball reporting at DSF / Sport1 in the 1990s and 2000s . Other well-known commentators are the former basketball trainer Stefan Koch , Sky reporter Markus Krawinkel, Sportdigital editor-in-chief Arne Malsch and TV presenter Holger Speckhahn . Stefan Koch and Michael Körner regularly wrote columns for Telekombasketball.de .

The basketball department has had a podcast since 2015 , which Michael Körner moderates with Frank Buschmann until 2017 and with Alexander Dechant from 2017.
