Stefan Koch (born April 24, 1964 in Lich ) is a German basketball coach and commentator. He is the brother of the 140-time national basketball player Michael Koch .

Career

Koch played soccer as a teenager and suffered an open broken tibia at the age of eleven, as a result of which, according to his own statements, a leg amputation was threatened. He played basketball in the club from the age of 15.

He began his coaching career during his studies (subjects: journalism, German, politics and history; graduation as Magister Artrium ) in 1988 at TV 1860 Lich . He led the team from the major league through the regional league to the 2nd basketball league . After these successes he switched to MTV Wolfenbüttel and looked after the team in the 2nd Bundesliga. In the 1994 season he made his debut as a coach in the basketball league with BG Bramsche / Osnabrück . But already halfway through the 1994/95 season he moved due to the financial difficulties of the Lower Saxon team in the Ukraine to Bipa moda Odessa in the local first division. In 1995 he began his employment as a player scout in Europe for the NBA club Vancouver Grizzlies , which continued until 2001 . After his trip to the Ukraine, he returned to Germany and initially took over the Bundesliga club SV Tally Oberelchingen , before he was hired as head coach by MTV Giessen two years later . In 1999 he became the first coach of the newly founded Skyliners Frankfurt and reached the semi-finals of the play-offs with them in the premiere season . After two years he went to Austria and coached the Bundesliga club Basket Bears Kapfenberg . After working as a basketball expert for DSF , now Sport1 , at the beginning of the 2003/04 season , he was signed as head coach by BG Iceline Karlsruhe for the rest of the season. For the following two years he returned to Gießen to the Gießen 46ers and also worked as a basketball expert for Premiere in the 2005/06 season .

In the 2009/2010 season he was active as an expert and co-commentator at DSF and Sport1 and accompanied the games of the BBL.

During his career he was also appointed to the coaching staff of the German national team a number of times . For the 2010/11 season he signed a one-year contract with Artland Dragons as the successor to Thorsten Leibenath . There he was able to lead his team in fourth place after completing the main round. Previously, the Dragons had missed the play-offs for two years. Under Koch, the Dragons were eliminated in the semifinals against Brose Baskets Bamberg . After two more play-off appearances, Koch cited family reasons in 2013 when he turned down an offer to extend the game for just one more season. On November 22, 2013, Koch signed a contract with the s.Oliver Baskets in Würzburg . Koch was active as a coach for the Baskets until the end of the season, but could not prevent the sporting descent.

Since autumn 2014 Koch has been working as a commentator , expert ("Koch School") and columnist for Telekom Basketball , is also used for basketball broadcasts on the Internet broadcaster DAZN , he also publishes articles on basketball in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and gives lectures on the areas Leadership, group dynamics, communication as well as personnel selection and offers advisory activities for management personalities from business and sport.
