Michael Koch (born January 13, 1966 in Lich ) is a German basketball coach and, as a former player, one of the most successful national players in Germany. Among other things, he won the European Championship in 1993 and eleven national and international titles.

Player career

Koch, whose brother Stefan also made a career in basketball, played in the youth of TV Lich and was also a talented table tennis player . In the latter sport he made it to the district champion. In Lich he played with the basketball players in the men's upper league at the age of 16 before he went to MTV 1846 Giessen . At the age of 17 he played there for the first time in the basketball Bundesliga. In the Bundesliga quarter-finals of the 1986/87 game year, the then 20-year-old scored 57 points in two games against Steiner Bayreuth and thus threw the Upper Franconians and his Giesseners out of the race. Shortly afterwards he received an offer from Bayreuth, which he accepted. The agreement also contained an apprenticeship (tax assistant) for Koch and a job for his girlfriend. Koch broke off his training after a short time and devoted himself entirely to basketball. He also gave up a degree in business administration that he had begun during his time in Bayreuth because of the high level of sporting activity. During his time in Bayreuth he won the German Cup and a German championship twice . He rose to the position of team captain in Bayreuth. In 1990 he failed as a city council candidate of the Bayreuth community only narrowly to join the Bayreuth city council.

He had his greatest successes at TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen, with whom he became German champion five times and two more cup winners. In 1993 he became European champion, in the course of the tournament he scored nine points per game, in the final against Russia it was six. At the 1995 European Championships, Koch was the best German and fourth-best basket shooter in the European Championship with an average of 21.6 points per game. In 1995, Koch was voted Player of the Year (Germany) by the professional magazine Basketball . In 1996 he moved to Greece to Panathinaikos Athens , where he became a crowd favorite and won a number of titles. He also played for Marousi Athens and Ionikos Neas Filadelfias . In Greece he was nicknamed "Mercedes". Seven years later, in 2003, he came back to Germany. He played another season for the 2BA Dragons Rhöndorf. Koch, whose strength was in particular three-point throws and defense, played 140 times for the national team. The total number of points he scored in the Bundesliga is 6404, which was third in the league's all-time basketball list at the time he retired. Koch's trademark as a player was a t-shirt worn under the shirt.

Coaching career

After the end of his playing career, Koch initially worked as a youth coach in Rhöndorf and from the 2005/2006 season as a coach at Telekom Baskets Bonn ; first as an assistant coach, after their separation from coach Daniel Jusup he became head coach of Bonn. In the 2007/2008 season he sensationally led Telekom Baskets from Bonn after victories over the cup winner and championship contender Artland Dragons in the quarter-finals and the Deutsche Bank Skyliners Frankfurt in the semifinals in the final of the German championship against Alba Berlin . There they were defeated by the basketball players from the capital with 1: 3 victories. In 2009 Koch led his team, which had finished fourth in the main round, again into the play-off final, where they lost 3-2 to EWE Baskets Oldenburg .

In May 2013, the shareholders' meeting of Telekom Baskets Bonn announced that it did not want to extend the contract with Koch. Until then, with eight seasons from 2006 to 2013, Koch was the longest-serving head coach of the Basketball Bundesliga, who only worked for one club. On December 29, 2013, Koch was introduced as the new head coach of Medi bayreuth ; he took over the position on January 1, 2014, initially until the end of the 2013/2014 season. Under Koch, Bayreuth managed to stay in the Bundesliga. Following the 2013/2014 season, Koch extended his contract in Bayreuth until 2016. Under his leadership, the Bayreuthers managed to stay out of the league in every season. With the beginning of the planning of a new concept for basketball in Bayreuth, however, Koch and Upper Franconia parted ways after his contract expired in summer 2016.

At the beginning of the 2018/19 game year, Koch took up the position of head coach at the Cypriot first division club AEL Limassol . He stayed in office for a season. On March 1, 2020, he became managing director of the operating company of the Bundesliga club Gießen 46ers .
