Pascal Roller (born November 20, 1976 in Heidelberg ) is a former German national basketball player . The career of the point guard is closely linked to the Frankfurt Skyliners , for whom he played from 1999 to 2011 with a one-year break. With the team he won the cup in 2000 and German champion in 2004. Personally, he was named Player of the Year 2004 and Most Likeable Player 2010 . This award was renamed the Pascal Roller Award the following year at the end of his career . With the national team , he was third in the 2002 World Cup, Vice European Champion in 2005 and he took part in the 2008 Olympic Games.

Career

The way to become a professional athlete

His sister Julia played a major role in Pascal Roller's athletic development in his youth. She motivated him to take up classical ballet training , which he completed between the ages of 5 and 15. It was also she who took him to basketball training at USC Heidelberg at the age of 10 . Ballet also helped the young Pascal Roller in basketball. His youth coach Joachim Klaehn said: “ Pascal was a real talent for movement. His great speed, an unbelievable coordination and a clear head were his strengths ”. Even in later years, his unusual training was often discussed. During the semi-final series against Alba Berlin in 2005, he said to the Berliner Zeitung : " I learned the way to stabilize in the air, for example by dancing ".

In 1993, Pascal Roller moved to the nearby TV Langen to combine school and sports training at the local basketball part-time boarding school (BTI) . In addition to playing in the youth field, he has also played in the 2nd basketball league . After a year he moved to the league competitor SV 03 Tübingen . Roller graduated from high school at the Kepler High School there

Together with Robert Maras , he began his professional career in 1996 at USC Freiburg , also in the southern season of the second Bundesliga. The team achieved promotion to the first division. There Pascal Roller developed into a top performer with an average of 10.2 points and played a key role in staying up. His performance did not go unnoticed and he was called to the national team. Roller made his debut in the DBB jersey on May 28, 1999.

The rise in Frankfurt

In summer 1999 Pascal Roller signed with the newly founded Bundesliga team Skyliners Frankfurt . His intended task was to be the second point guard backup behind the veteran and then national player Kai Nürnberger . Despite his role as a supplementary player, Roller was already the top scorer in his first game in Frankfurt with 19 points in an away win against SSV ratiopharm Ulm . He also had his share of the biggest success of this season, the victory in the cup final against the favorite Alba Berlin, with 12 points. In this game he had to defend, among other things, Henrik Rödl , who is about 20 cm taller . " Pascal and Kai decided the game for us, " said then coach Stefan Koch in 2010, remembering this game. Overall, his role in the team was smaller than in the previous year in the sporting less successful Freiburg - he played 25 minutes instead of the previous 37 minutes on average, and his average points scored fell accordingly from 10.8 to 7.2.

At the beginning of the 2000/2001 season, Pascal Roller was injured (crack of the Syndesmoses ), so that he was only used in 19 of the 30 season games. However, he was able to increase his point yield 8.9 with about the same playing time per game. This was due, among other things, to the success rate of the three-point throws improved to over 43%. Since Kai Nürnberger was injured in the same season, Derrick Taylor was signed as the third high-class game designer . Despite good performances, this only stayed eleven games until the team's injury concerns were over. According to team manager Gunnar Wöbke , this was primarily a decision for the young Pascal Roller.

In the following season, Roller played more than Kai Nürnberger for the first time, with significantly improved throwing rates (32 minutes, 50.7% two, 46.4% three). Only the two (at the time allowed) US professionals Marcus Goree and Chad Austin received more playing time than him under the new coach Gordon Herbert . His effectiveness for the main round, the first Opel Skyliners, was greater than three years earlier for the relegated USC Freiburg . This year he was elected for the first time by the fans of the Bundesliga basketball team for the Allstar Day South.

Nevertheless, the 2002/2003 season is considered to be his final breakthrough, also from Rollers' own point of view. He confirmed his good performances both in the Bundesliga (points average increased to 15.8) and good performances in the ULEB Cup . There he increased his success rate again to over 50% through good litter selection. Nevertheless, his point yield and effectiveness decreased slightly compared to the previous season in the higher-class ULEB Euroleague . Pascal Roller was chosen as an all star one more time.

The following year he confirmed his sporting achievements again and led the youngest team in the league to win the German championship in 2004. In the same season, he was elected for the third time in a row as part of the all-star team as well as basketball player of the year , the forerunner of Most Valuable Player Award from the Bundesliga. The main pillars were next to roller Tyrone Ellis , Chris A. Williams and Mario Kasun , who moved to the NBA after the season to the Orlando Magic .

Under the new coach Murat Didin , the well-rehearsed team repeated their sporting performance in 2004/2005. Didin always called Roller captain , highlighting his role in the team. He also coined the term Bermuda Triangle for the three most important players, Roller, Ellis and Williams . In the fifth game of the quarterfinals against the Artland Dragons , Pascal Roller reached his playoff best with 25 points in five successful three-pointers. After the first semi-final match against Alba Berlin, their trainer Henrik Rödl said about Roller: “ It was perhaps the most perfect half that Roller has ever played. When someone is in that mood, there is little that can be done ”. In this series, Roller prevailed against the direct opponent in the pointguard position in the national team, Mithat Demirel . Despite a Pascal Roller in top form, the title could not be defended because his team lost in the final against last year's opponent GHP Bamberg in the fifth and decisive game. Opponents in the build-up position were Demond Mallet and the young Steffen Hamann . Together with Chris Williams, Roller received his fourth All Star nomination.

Franchise player in Frankfurt

At the European Championships in summer 2005, Roller showed his best performance in the national team. In addition to his achievements over the past six years in Frankfurt and his role as a crowd favorite, the bronze medal he won was the reason for the Frankfurt management to offer him a new six-year contract. The contract lasted up to and including 2011 and included a year abroad, as it was Pascal Roller's dream to play in an international league.

2005/2006 was the toughest year in the Frankfurt team's history. The team narrowly escaped relegation after changing coach. Nevertheless, Pascal Roller received an offer from the European top team FC Barcelona during the season to replace the injured backup pointguard. Because of the sporting situation in Frankfurt, Gunnar Wöbke did not approve the change request. In the 2006/2007 season, Pascal Roller played for one year at the Italian top division club Angelico Biella after no such attractive offer as the one from Barcelona had come up for him in the summer.

In 2007 he moved back to Frankfurt, where he was under contract until the end of the 2010/2011 season.

In the national jersey

Roller achieved two of his greatest successes in the national jersey. He won the bronze medal at the 2002 World Cup in Indianapolis, USA, as well as the silver medal at the European basketball championships in Serbia and Montenegro in 2005, in which he and Dirk Nowitzki played a major role.

In 2008 he drove with the German national team to the Olympic Games in Beijing, for which he qualified with the team in a qualifying tournament in Athens. In Beijing, his team did not get beyond the preliminary round. Even before the Olympic Games, he announced that he would no longer be part of the national team. The reason he gave was that at his age he now needed the summer (when the national team played together) to regenerate. However, he did not rule out being available for individual games when he was needed. He also wants to spend more time with his family. Shortly after the Olympic Games, he became the father of a daughter whose third first name is Olympia .

farewell

During the 2010/2011 season, Roller announced that he would end his career at the end of the season. Massive knee problems and pain had accelerated the athletic retreat into the second row. He played his last game on June 2, 2011 in the 5th semi-final game of the Skyliners against Alba Berlin , which Frankfurt lost 87:68. After the deficit in the game was finally too big to still be able to win the game and the spectators sang his name in the ball sports hall, he was substituted on for the last time a few minutes before the end of the game and celebrated from there until well after the end of the game - also by the traveling Berlin fans.

In the first game of the season after the summer break against EWE Baskets Oldenburg , his shirt number 11 , which he wore every season in Frankfurt, was withdrawn from circulation. It is no longer awarded by the Skyliners. An oversized jersey with the 11 was hung under the roof of the hall.

His farewell game Pascal & Friends against the FRAPORT SKYLINERS took place on January 28, 2012 for the benefit of Basketball Makes School .

Professional career

As a competitive athlete, Pascal Roller began studying several times without completing it. As a team athlete, he was not able to freely divide his time and agree with the university's schedule and was also employed as a national player all year round. Despite an option for a coaching career with the Skyliners, he decided to work for the Frankfurt sports marketing agency United after his athletic departure . Other mainstays were the co-moderation as an expert at the TV station Sport 1 and at the Skyliners as the project manager of the Company Cup company tournament and ambassador for the basketball school project .

Roller played a key role in setting up the structures at the Hamburg Towers , which first took part in the 2nd Bundesliga ProA game in 2014. He became the managing director and partner of the Towers. He ended his activity as managing director in May 2015. In November 2016, Hamburger SV announced that Roller would henceforth support the club's basketball division in expanding youth work.

Style of play

Pascal Roller was considered a particularly fast and agile player. As a development player, he mainly directed the offensive play of his teams. He determined the pace of the game and staged his teammates by creating free throws for them. Especially with his three-point throw, he was also personally dangerous because he was able to start a throw very quickly from the run that was almost impossible to defend. During the 2002/2009 season in the ULEB Cup, his success rate was over 50%. He was considered a player with excellent game intelligence and took responsibility for the team's game at crucial moments. Due to his free throw rate of sometimes over 90% in the season's average, it was difficult for the opposing teams to tactically foul him.

On the defensive he was limited by his height of 1.80 m, but was able to largely compensate for this disadvantage through his speed and team interaction through defensive play systems. His style of play was not prone to fouls, so he could use his fouls tactically.

Public image

He is known for his friendly and courteous approach to the media and is therefore in great demand for interviews. Roller was the active spokesman for the German Basketball Federation. In addition, he also appeared in public as a board member of the players' union SP.IN , for example in the context of planned actions at Allstar Day 2006, 2008 and Top4 2009. He placed the balance of interests and not confrontation in the foreground.

Pascal Roller supports several charity initiatives. So he is an ambassador of respect! No space for racism , athletes for organ donation and basketball AID for supporting projects for children with cancer. In addition, he is active in several regional sports and basketball-related projects in Hesse and in the Rhine-Neckar area.

After his final 2010/2011 season, the Basketball Bundesliga decided to rename the MLP Award (Most Likable Player) the Pascal Roller Award in his honor . The first winner was Kyle Hines .
