Demond Mallet (born February 22, 1978 in Leesville , Louisiana ) is a retired American basketball player . The agile guard with a good marksmanship from the three-point line is a third cousin of the world-famous former basketball player Shaquille O'Neal . From 2001 to 2007 Mallet played in the German basketball league and was once German champion and cup winner . He later played for the Spanish top club DKV Joventut de Badalona . After Mallet played again for Artland Dragons in Germany in the 2012/13 Bundesliga basketball league , he then returned to Belgium for Spirou BC Charleroi, where he had already played two seasons before.

Career

After studying in Lake Charles in his native US state at McNeese State University , for whose cowboys he was active in the Southland Conference of the NCAA Division I, Mallet signed a professional contract in Germany with BS / ENERGY Braunschweig in the BBL in 2001 . After three seasons he moved to runner-up from Bamberg , with whom he won the first German championship in 2005. In the following season, Mallet was able to make a name for himself at European level through the Bamberg's appearances in the Euroleague . At the end of the 2005/06 season he suffered a second cruciate ligament tear , an injury that had overtaken him in Braunschweig in 2003. For the following season he was signed by the defending champion RheinEnergie Cologne so that he could play another season in the Euroleague. The championship that season was won by his former club from Bamberg, but Mallet was able to win the trophy with the Cologne team.

In 2007 he signed a contract in Badalona , Catalonia , with which he also won the national cup and the ULEB Cup at international level together with the German national player Jan Jagla . After another season in Badalona, where they narrowly failed in the first round of the German representative Alba Berlin in the Euroleague , Mallet left the club alongside Ricky Rubio and Jan Jagla in 2009. The following season he played for Türk Telekomspor from Ankara .

In 2010 he switched to the Belgian champions from Charleroi . With Spirou BC he was able to reach the main round of the highest European club competition ULEB Euroleague twice over a qualifying round, which a Belgian club team had not been able to achieve for almost a decade. In the qualification competition, the second German representative Alba Berlin was defeated. The first group stage was the final destination for the new Belgian champions from 2011 in this competition. At the turn of the year 2011/12 Mallet moved to the Israeli top club Maccabi from Tel Aviv , whereby Spirou secured an option to return after his contract with Maccabi. After the elimination of the Israeli club in the quarter-final play-offs of the Euroleague, this also dissolved the contract with Mallet and he returned to Spirou. In the subsequent Belgian championship play-offs, however, they missed another championship success in the fifth and decisive final game against Telenet Ostend after a defeat in extra time.

In the basketball Bundesliga 2012/13 Mallet played again with the Dragons from Artland in Germany, but could not follow on from earlier successes. After a fourth place in the Beko BBL-Pokal 2013 cup competition , they were eliminated in sixth place in the main round without a win in the first play-off round for the championship against the previous runner-up ratiopharm Ulm . Then Mallet returned to Spirou BC to Charleroi, later played again in Badalona and in the French first division in Nancy. In February 2018 he announced the end of his playing career.
