The 2.08 m tall center played in his home country at Valparaiso University ( Indiana, USA ). He played 116 games for the university team between 1992 and 1996 and had averages of 9.1 points and 7.8 rebounds per encounter. His statistically best season was 1995/96, when he scored an average of 13.8 points per encounter and brought 11.5 rebounds. With 910 rebounds, he took first place in the university's all-time best list and held this position until January 2017, when he was surpassed by Alec Peters.

He took his first steps in professional basketball in France , followed by positions in Portugal and New Zealand , before moving to Central German BC in Germany in 1999 .

In 2001 he went to Bamberg within the Bundesliga. He was the team captain of the Brose Baskets for years . In the 2007/08 season he came to 4.9 rebounds and 3.5 points per game. He was considered an unconditional defender who always put himself in the service of the team. By the 2004/05 season he was the best rebounder in the basketball league for five years in a row. He also achieved top marks in this discipline in the ULEB Cup and was the best rebounder in the European competition in the 2004/05 season with 10.7 per game. In 2005 and 2007 he became German champions with the Franks. During his time in Bamberg, his duels under the basket with Jovo Stanojević from Berlin caused a stir throughout the league . At the end of June 2008 it was announced that his contract with Brose Baskets was not being extended. He then signed a contract with the Paderborn Baskets until the end of the 2009 season . There he helped to lead the club into the play-offs, where Paderborn lost 3-2 to Alba Berlin in the quarter-finals.

In July 2009 it was announced that Ensminger will sign a two-year contract with Telekom Baskets Bonn for the 2009/2010 season . There he formed a team in the indoor position together with John Bowler in the 2009/2010 season . In 2011 Ensminger extended his contract in Bonn for another two years until the end of the 2012/2013 season. After the end of the 2012/2013 season, he ended his career as a player. He played a total of 485 Bundesliga games and, with 5,438 points, was ninth in the all-time Bundesliga basket hunter list when he retired from competitive sports in 2013. Due to his hard and physical style of play, Ensminger experienced "the absolute love of his teammates and fans of his club, but also the contempt of opposing supporters," he was described in the book 50 Years of the Basketball Bundesliga .

Trainer

For the 2013/2014 season, Ensminger became the new head coach of the Oettinger Rockets Gotha in the 2nd Bundesliga ProA . He received a contract in Gotha that was valid for both the ProA and the 2nd Bundesliga ProB . After a record of ten wins and ten defeats during the 2016/17 season, the Rockets parted ways with Chris Ensminger on January 31, 2017.

For the 2017/18 season he took over the position of head coach for the NBBL team from BBU Allgäu / Memmingen, which is part of the youth network of the Bundesliga club ratiopharm Ulm .
