Basketball in Gotha eV is a basketball club from Gotha . The men's team, which was spun off into a GmbH in 2009, competed under the name Oettinger Rockets Gotha until the end of the 2015/16 season and subsequently as Oettinger Rockets until the end of 2017 and played at Messe Erfurt from the 2016/17 season . In the 2017/18 season, the team took part in the Bundesliga basketball game. Since the Oettinger Brewery withdrew as main sponsor after 20 years at the end of 2017, the name was then simply Rockets .

history

The Rockets emerged from the 1st men's team of the Basketball in Gotha eV association, which was founded on July 2nd, 1998. The first men's team of the club began in 1998 in the district league and rose to the first regional league by 2005. In September 2009 BiG GmbH was founded, which from then on organized the men's team. Dirk Kollmar became the company's first managing director . The parent club Basketball in Gotha (BiG) eV continued to manage the game operations of the basketball teams from the men's (with the exception of the professional team), women and youngsters.

In the 2009/10 season, the team came third in the 1st Regionalliga Südost and was awarded the right to promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga ProB . In the first season after the ProB promotion you missed the sporting league (defeat in the relegation round against Bernau), but could still stay in the league. In the 2011/12 season, the Rockets were ProB champions and rose to the ProA. Master trainer was the Swiss Marko Simić .

In the second division, the 2. Bundesliga ProA , the club quickly gained a foothold, developed under the former Bundesliga player Chris Ensminger as head coach (from July 2013) to a top team in the league and took on the goal of “promotion to the Bundesliga” the look. In May 2014, President Dirk Kollmar, who was one of the founders of the Basketball in Gotha eV association and who had a decisive influence on the development of basketball in Gotha as a functionary and sponsor ( Oettinger Brewery ), died in May 2014 .

The U16 team Gothas made the jump to JBBL in 2015 .

The former creator of Brose Baskets Bamberg , Wolfgang Heyder , first worked as a consultant, then as “Head of Sports and Economic Development”, in the implementation of the promotion to the Bundesliga . "Now we want to move up within the next two years and have thus also ushered in a paradigm shift," said Heyder in an interview with basketball.de in July 2016.

Game of the Oettinger Rockets in the MesseHÖLLE Erfurt (2017)

The men's team has played their home games in the Erfurt exhibition center since the 2016/17 season . It is also known as MesseHÖLLE Erfurt . This step was taken, among other things, for the purpose of further professionalization and the development of new audience resources. On January 31, 2017, head coach Chris Ensminger separated after the Rockets were only in seventh place in the table with ten wins and ten losses. Successor (for the time being until the end of the season) was Ivan Pavić . Pavic led the Thuringians to the ProA final in spring 2017 and thus to promotion to the basketball league . In the semifinals against Chemnitz Gotha was already behind with 0-2 victories, but then won the following three games and thus moved into the final series. The team achieved the decisive victory for promotion to the Bundesliga on May 3, 2017, three years to the day after the surprising death of Dirk Kollmar, the "maker" of Gotha basketball. The ascent was dedicated to the Kollmar association. The "rockets" lost in the final against the Central German BC both the first and second leg (80:87, 62:84), so they ended the 2016/17 season as runner-up. On May 31, 2017, the contract with promotion coach Pavic was extended.

In the summer of 2017, Gotha's U19 team qualified for participation in the youth basketball league .

In mid-December 2017, the Oettinger brewery announced that it would withdraw as a sponsor of the team at the end of 2017. In order to ensure the continuation of the game operations, Astrid Kollmar (partner of the operator BiG GmbH) brought a six-figure sum from her private assets into the team budget. After the departure of the sponsor and namesake Oettinger, the team title "Oettinger Rockets" was shortened to "Rockets" on January 1, 2018. Due to an 81:85 defeat against the Thuringian competitor Jena on the last day of the Bundesliga season 2017/18, the team slipped to 17th place in the table and thus to a relegation zone. Thus, after a year of membership in the first division, relegation was certain.

The second Gotha men's team, officially taking on the name OeTTINGER Rockets Gotha 2, won the championship title in the 1st Regionalliga Süd-Ost in the 2017/18 season and thus achieved promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga ProB. In the team that was led by coach Florian Gut to win the title, several talents received match practice who were entitled to play with double licenses in the regional league and the Bundesliga.

At the beginning of June 2018, the team management announced that after relegation from the Bundesliga, they would not exercise their right to participate in the 2nd Bundesliga ProA. The reason given was the lack of “economic framework conditions” for operations in the second division. After it was initially left open whether one would take up the starting place in the ProB, which was achieved through the promotion of the second team, it was announced in mid-June 2018 that they would withdraw to the 2nd regional league. The right to participate in the 2nd Bundesliga ProA has been assigned to Artland Dragons and the right to participate in the 2nd Bundesliga ProB to BBC Coburg .

The new beginning of the men's team - now again under the umbrella of Basketball in Gotha (BiG) eV - began in the 2018/19 season in the 2nd regional league under coach Valentino Lott. Ronny Schönau and Peter Krautwald temporarily looked after the team, and in mid-November 2019 the Spaniard Iria Uxía Romarís Durán took up the position of coach.
