The Niners Chemnitz are the first men's team of the basketball club "Niners Chemnitz eV" from Chemnitz , Saxony , Germany . The Saxons play ProA in the 2nd basketball league .

history

The association was created in 1999 as "BV Chemnitz 99" through the merger of the associations "BG Chemnitz" and "Lok Chemnitz". In 2001, BV Chemnitz 99 began a cooperation with the Technical University of Chemnitz , which is why "TU" was added to the name. In the summer of 2002, the men's (BV TU Chemnitz 99) and women's ( ChemCats ) areas were separated. From the 99 in the club name, the nickname Niners developed over the last few years for the first men's team.

In the meantime the cooperation with the Technical University of Chemnitz has been dissolved and since the 2007/08 season the association has been called "BV Chemnitz 99" again. In the run-up to the 2008/2009 season, the business operations of the Bundesliga team were spun off into a corporation (Niners Chemnitz GmbH). Then the right to participate in the ProA was transferred to that corporation.

The Niners have been playing in the 2nd Basketball Bundesliga South since the 2002/2003 season and took 6th place in the 03/04 season and 7th place in 04/05. In the 2005/2006 season, the Chemnitz team took 3rd place.

As 5th in the final table of the 2006/2007 season they qualified for the newly created single-track ProA. In the 2007/2008 season, the team only finished 15th in the table and was thus one of two athletic relegators to the 2nd Bundesliga ProB . However, since SOBA Dragons Rhöndorf returned their ProA license to AG 2. BBL at the end of the season, they were subsequently declared a technical relegation and the license was transferred to BV Chemnitz 99. Thus, the Niners could also compete in the ProA in the 2008/2009 season, which ended in 7th place in the table. The consolidation could be continued in the 2009/2010 season, which also ended for the Niners in 7th place in the table.

The 2010/2011 season saw the best result in the club's history. Chemnitz ended the season in third place and narrowly missed promotion to the basketball league . In the summer of 2011, Felix Schreier, then 22, was appointed as the new head coach. At the time, he was the youngest head coach in the history of ProA. Schreier replaced Torsten Loibl , who looked after the team from 2002 to 2006 as well as in 2008 and in the 2010/11 season. In 2011/2012 the club was able to finish the regular season in third place in the table and thus qualify for the playoffs, where they lost 3-1 to the Düsseldorf Baskets in the quarter-finals.

In the 2012/2013 season, the team achieved the worst placement since 2008 and only reached 10th place in the end. The playoffs as the season's goal were therefore missed. Starting in 2013, an anonymous sponsor will finance three full-time young trainers for the next ten years with the sum of one million euros. In the same year the NINERS Academy was founded as a youth center.

In 2013/2014, the Chemnitz team started with seven wins and only one defeat. Nevertheless, in the end it was only enough for eleventh place and the playoffs were missed again.

In the 2014/15 season, after a season opener with one win and four defeats in October, coach Schreier was parted, and his assistant Kai Buchmann was promoted to boss. In November 2014 the club was fined for violating a license requirement with regard to the financial plan on the part of the 2nd Bundesliga, which was lifted again in January 2015. In mid-March 2015 Buchmann's term of office ended, he was replaced after slipping to the relegation ranks by the American Pete Miller , who was to act as sports director from April. The Niners finally reached 13th place in the table.

Miller then switched to the post of sporting director as planned, and the Argentine Rodrigo Pastore was hired as the new head coach at the end of May 2015 . Under his leadership, the playoffs were reached again for the first time since 2012 thanks to seventh place in the table at the end of the point round in the 2015/2016 season. There they were defeated in the first round (quarter-finals) with 0: 3 wins to the eventual champions Jena.

In April 2017, the Saxons announced the commitment of Konstantin Lwowsky , who had previously worked for years in the youth and professional area of the Bundesliga club Alba Berlin . In Chemnitz, Lwowsky took over the office of sports director. In the 2016/17 season they just missed promotion to the basketball Bundesliga  : In the semi-final series against Gotha, the Chemnitz-based company had two wins, another would have been enough for promotion. However, they lost the remaining three games and thus missed participation in the final and the move to the top German division.

In the 2018/19 season, the Saxons set a new club record when they won the first nine games of the season. In mid-November 2018, the association was in the press worldwide when Chancellor Angela Merkel attended a training session for two youth teams together with Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer and Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig as part of a visit to Chemnitz on November 16, 2018 . The Saxons finished the 2018/19 points round as first in the table. In the semi-final series, the Saxons met Hamburg , where they had to admit defeat in the last and decisive game in their own hall with 72:78, thus missing the athletic promotion to the Bundesliga.

In the 2019/20 season, the team won 22 games in a row, setting a new league record before losing to Paderborn in early March 2020. At the time the 2019/20 season was canceled (due to the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus ), the people of Chemnitz were in first place in the 2nd Bundesliga ProA, so they were granted the right to promotion to the Bundesliga. With an average of 3516 spectators per home game, the team posted the highest value in the league in 2019/20.

In the 2006/07 season, the previous record number of spectators in the Hartmannhalle in Chemnitz was achieved on January 6, 2007, when 3010 spectators flocked to the Richard-Hartmann-Halle for the East Derby against Science City Jena . In the 2011/12 season, around 2,600 people came to the hall for the game against FC Bayern Munich , which was the highest occupancy in many years.

On March 6, 2010, the first issue of NINERS360, the association's video magazine, was published. There are now over 100 issues that are produced by VideoVision GmbH in Chemnitz.
