The Dragons Rhöndorf are the basketball department of Rhöndorfer TV 1912 from the Rhöndorf district of Bad Honnef near Bonn . The club's first men's team belonged to the third-highest national division ProB until the end of the 2018/2019 season , after the team had already played first-class between 1995 and 1999.

history

Alternating between the 1st Bundesliga, 2nd Bundesliga, ProA and ProB (1994 to 2010)

Former names of the team are TV Rhöndorf , TV Tatami Rhöndorf and SOBA Dragons Rhöndorf in the 2nd Bundesliga North and previously in the Basketball Bundesliga . After reaching 1st place in the 2nd Bundesliga North Season at the end of the 1994/95 season, he was promoted to the Basketball Bundesliga. In the top German league, the team played from 1995 to 1999, before the license changed to the Skyliners Frankfurt . Rhöndorf then played again in the 2nd Bundesliga with a license bought from Ludwigsburg. After the renewed promotion to the 1st Bundesliga, the license was passed on again. This time the beneficiary was RheinEnergy Cologne , later Cologne 99ers . Rhöndorf remained second class and qualified for the 2007/2008 season for the newly introduced ProA. After a fourth place, the Dragons surprisingly withdrew into the lower season of the 2nd division. There they want to focus more on training young talents again. They have been pursuing this goal together with Telekom Baskets Bonn since the 2006/2007 season . Under the name SG Bonn / Rhöndorf , both clubs compete in the NBBL . The 2008/2009 season ended the Dragons in fourth place and missed promotion to the ProA. During the 2009/2010 season, the Dragons announced that their long-time sponsor and patron Franz Ludwig Solzbacher would cease their engagement at the end of the season. Thus, the Dragons start the 2010/2011 season without the addition of SOBA in their name. A new GmbH was also founded. The Dragons Rhöndorf Marketing GmbH took over the license at the end of the 2009/2010 season and became the new carrier of the Dragons' gaming operations. The managing director of the new GmbH became the manager of the Dragons, Michael Wichterich .

The 2009/2010 season was one of the most successful seasons in the club's history. With 26 wins and four defeats, the Soba Dragons were sovereign champions of the ProB and thus secured the right of promotion to the ProA . In addition, Eric Detlev was named Trainer of the Year at ProB. During the summer there were feverish attempts to secure the required budget for the ProA and this was successful. But the face of the team changed a lot. Long-standing, established players left the club, including Christopher Rojik , Johannes Lange and Jürgen Malbeck . Likewise, it was not possible to keep crowd favorite DeUndrae Spraggins . With a strongly rejuvenated team, an attempt should be made to re-establish the club in the ProA. But already one match day before the end of the season it was clear that the Dragons would miss relegation. After a 75:79 defeat against Würzburg after double extension, relegation was certain. DeUndrae Spraggins, who had since returned, couldn't change that either.

ProB, ProA and again ProB (2011 to 2017)

Florian Koch was part of the Dragons squad from 2011 to 2013

Due to the withdrawal of the license against USC Freiburg and the GiroLive-Ballers Osnabrück , the Dragons initially got their right to start in the ProA for 2011/2012. At the end of June 2011, however, those responsible announced that the Dragons would withdraw again into the ProB . Financial aspects were primarily responsible for this. There the strongly rejuvenated team was able to establish itself in the course of the season and reached position 5 of the southern season at the end of the regular season. In the play-offs, the Dragons were defeated by SG Braunschweig in two games and were eliminated in the second round. Shortly thereafter, coach Eric Detlev separated after more than 10 years with the Dragons. The reason for the separation was increasingly different views on the direction of the club, but also the desire for new impulses for the teams and the concept of the Dragons.

In April 2012, Boris Kaminski was introduced as a new head coach and sports director. Kaminski previously worked for the Hertener Löwen . The first season under Boris Kaminski the Dragons finished in first place in the southern season with 19 wins and 3 losses. In the first round of the play-offs, the Dragons then met the BSW Sixers from Sandersdorf and were eliminated in the first round due to injury concerns. For the 2013/2014 season, Fabian Thülig, a former public favorite, returned to the Drachenfels after he had previously terminated his contract with Telekom Baskets Bonn . The team also reached the play-offs in 2014 with 12 wins and 10 losses in the regular season. Opponent in the round of 16 was the former Bundesliga club Schwelmer Baskets . Against the Baskets, the Dragons were ultimately eliminated 1: 2 again in the first round. Shortly after leaving the play-offs, the Dragons announced the contract extension with head coach Boris Kaminski. He received a new contract until summer 2016.

For the 2014/2015 season, Savo Milovic, a former youth player of the Dragons, returned. The talents Kostja Mushidi, Alexander Angerer and Alexander Möller were also appointed to the Rhöndorfer ProB team. During the season, sports manager Sebastian Schmidt split up due to differing views in the sporting and economic areas of the club. In terms of sport, the Dragons established themselves in the top field of ProB-Süd and were able to finish the regular season in third place. In the play-offs, Boris Kaminski's team met in the round of 16 against the university giants Leipzig , against whom the Dragons were eliminated with 1: 2 and thus for the fourth time in a row did not survive the first round of the play-offs.

At the end of the 2014/2015 season it became known that the two athletically qualified teams of SC Rist Wedel and Oldenburg TB would not make use of their promotion rights. After the university giants Leipzig also renounced the ascent, the license went to the Dragons Rhöndorf, who officially announced on May 12, 2015 to compete in the ProA again . After just two wins and 16 defeats, head coach Boris Kaminski resigned from his duties in January 2016. His successor was his previous assistant coach Christian Mehrens . But even under Mehrens, the sporting turnaround no longer succeeded and the Dragons were relegated to the ProB as bottom of the table . Shortly after the end of the season, the Dragons announced the separation from Christian Mehrens, who did not receive a new contract as head coach. His predecessor Boris Kaminski returned to the Dragons Rhöndorf as the new managing director.

The new head coach for the 2016/2017 season was Matthias Sonnenschein, who previously worked as an assistant coach for the Dragons and was head coach for the JBBL team at SG Bonn / Rhöndorf . The playing time turned into a real roller coaster ride and culminated on the last day of the main round in a close final for the last playoff places. Ultimately, the Dragons slipped from seventh to tenth place due to their own defeat against the Weißenhorn Youngstars and the parallel victories of the Licher BasketBären, the TG s.Oliver Würzburg and the Skyliners Frankfurt II and had to go into the ProB relegation round for the first time in the club's history. With the US-American Aaron Nelson, the statistically best player left the team before the start of the relegation round, at the end of March the team management made a change of coach in order to add another stimulus in the fight for relegation: The Dutchman Thomas Roijakkers , who spent a month Had previously been dismissed at RSV Eintracht (ProB-Nordstaffel), which was also threatened with relegation , Sonnenschein replaced as head coach. Ultimately, the Rhöndorfer managed to stay up under Roijakker's leadership thanks to a 59:84 away win on the last day of the playdowns at the Licher BasketBären and were two points ahead of the university giants Leipzig in the final table of the relegation round , which due to a violation of the league statutes during the Playdowns had to accept a deduction of two counters.

Intensified cooperation with Telekom Baskets Bonn and relegation from professional basketball (from 2017)

During the summer of 2017, managing director Boris Kaminski announced his departure from the Dragons Rhöndorf and after a total of 5 years in various positions within the club, he switched to a sponsor in the private sector. His successor was Alexander Dohms, who had already been managing director of the entire club at the Dragons between 2011 and 2012. At the same time as Alexander Dohms, Thomas Adelt was introduced as the new head coach of the Dragons. Adelt was previously head coach of the second representation of Telekom Baskets Bonn in the 1st Regionalliga West.

In the course of introducing the new staff, it was announced that the cooperation between Telekom Baskets Bonn and Dragons Rhöndorf would be further intensified and that the Bonn team would be responsible for the sporting interests of the Dragons Rhöndorf in the future. This should also be accompanied by a uniform conceptual planning that also includes the JBBL and NBBL teams of the Bonn / Rhöndorf team .

After the difficult 2016/2017 season, the 2017/2018 season was again a successful year for the Dragons, who, led by US guard Kameron Taylor, were able to record 15 wins and 7 defeats and start from third place in the playoffs. There, however, the team was eliminated with 0: 2 against the dukes of Wolfenbüttel .

As a result, most of the top performers left the team over the summer and joined other teams from the ProB. Mainly due to the weakness in the German positions in the squad, the Dragons Rhöndorf got into the relegation battle early in the 2018/2019 season and had to go into the league's relegation round as the penultimate in the table. There it was no longer possible to ensure relegation, and already two game days before the end of the playdowns, the sporting descent was certain after a defeat against BBC Coburg . This ended an era of 25 years of professional basketball in Bad Honnef.

In mid-May 2019, the Dragons announced the engagement of Yassin Idbihi as the new managing director for the sporting sector. Idbihi, who previously worked as a youth coordinator at Brose Bamberg , is to take over the management of the Dragons together with the previous managing director Alexander Dohms. The coaching position was also newly filled, Markus Röwenstrunk was signed for this position. After a bumpy start with only three wins from the first six games, head coach Markus Röwenstrunk was released from his duties in October 2019. As an interim head coach, Yassin Idbihi took on the sporting management of the 1st team in addition to his duties as the sports director.

In January 2020 it was announced through a joint press release that the board of the association had released the previous managing director Alexander Dohms from his duties. In the course of the corona pandemic, the West German Basketball Association decided not to hold the playoffs of the 1st Regional League West and so the season ended with the table of the 25th matchday. The Dragons Rhöndorf ended the season in 3rd place in the table and missed their return to the ProB.

The home arena of the Dragons is the Menzenberg sports hall ("Dragon Dome") in the Selhof district of Bad Honnef. The Dragons played their home games there even in the first division. The hall currently has a capacity of 1,800 for home games. During the 2006/2007 season, however, the Dragons had to play a large part of their home games in the sports hall on Sonnenhügel in the neighboring Oberpleis, as the Menzenberg sports hall was unplayable after an arson attack. An extension of the hall was completely destroyed by the fire. Likewise, the mobile grandstands stored in it. To do this, the entire parquet floor in the hall had to be replaced. Just in time for the 2007/2008 season, the Dragons were able to return to their traditional home hall. During the summer break in 2015, the Menzenberg sports hall was renovated again and new display boards, an LED video wall and a new parquet floor were installed or laid.

For the home game against FC Bayern Munich in October 2010, the Dragons moved again to another hall. Due to the great demand, the game took place in Bonn's Telekom Dome in front of 3300 spectators.

Further venues for the other Dragons teams are:

Hagerhof Castle

The Dragons Rhöndorf have been cooperating with the Schloss Hagerhof high school for many years in order to enable the talents to optimally network sports and training . Many talented players have lived in the boarding school there and graduated from high school. Likewise, the Hagerhof high school with its sports focus offers many talents the opportunity to develop and train individually outside of the club training.
