The GiroLive-Ballers Osnabrück are a former German basketball team from Osnabrück , which played in the ProA until their license to play was withdrawn in 2011 .

history

The GiroLive-Ballers were an independent club with a men's team that last played in the 2nd Bundesliga ProA . Ballers Sportmarketing GmbH, which was registered at the Osnabrück District Court in May 2008 and whose managing director Christian Somberg became the managing director, was responsible for the implementation of the game operations and the marketing. The Ballers emerged from the men's team of Osnabrücker SC , which in the 2007/08 season under the name P4two Ballers Osnabrücker SC became champions of the 1st Regionalliga Nord and thus rose to the 2nd Bundesliga ProB . On the field, the team was led by the American Lamar Morinia , who scored 22.6 points per game, followed by his compatriot Aaron Fleetwood (15.5 points / game) and Steve Wachalski (15.3 points / game). Master coach was the Greek Dimitris Polychroniadis , who was replaced as head coach after the triumph by Michael Bühren . Bühren took over the coaching office in April 2008. The 2008/09 season in the ProB ended in fifth place in the table. In May 2009 the team name was changed to GiroLive-Ballers Osnabrück after the Sparkasse Osnabrück with its own brand GiroLive had taken over the naming rights. From the 2009/10 season Osnabrück played in the 2. Bundesliga ProA , managing director Somberg stated the goal of wanting to move up to the basketball league with the team "2011/12 at the latest" . The Serbian Dragan Torbica was hired as head coach for the 2009/10 season, but was dismissed in November 2009. As his successor, the young Swiss Marko Simić was hired, who led the team to ninth place in the final table 2009/10. In January 2011, Simic was replaced on the coaching post by Thorsten Leibenath .

The Ballers wanted to build on past successes in Osnabrück basketball and thus aim for promotion to the basketball league in the medium term . In addition, the infrastructure was significantly improved for the 2010/2011 season. With its own Kikxxlarena , which met the requirements of Pro A, there were training and play opportunities and also a VIP area, VIP boxes, a gastronomy and fan mile as well as the office with ticket sales and fan shop. For the operation of the multi-purpose hall a separate GmbH was founded in spring 2010, the management of which Somberg also took over. In the course of 2010, several former players of the team filed lawsuits after the club had withheld parts of their salaries due to counterclaims and agreements had not been reached.

At the beginning of 2011 it became known that the Ballers had to contend with major financial problems. In March 2011, insolvency proceedings were finally initiated. The ballers were then withdrawn from the league during the current season, and the ballers stopped playing. All previous results have been canceled. After the founding of a new company, attempts were still made to create the prerequisites for being able to compete in the ProB , but this also failed and initially ended professional basketball in Osnabrück.
