Thorsten Holger Axel Leibenath (* 7. April 1975 in Leverkusen ) is a German basketball t Rainer . Until 2019 he was the trainer of Ratiopharm Ulm before he became sports director of the Bundesliga club. He has been an A-trainer license holder since 2000.

career

Leibenath began his basketball career as a player with the German record champions Bayer Leverkusen . In 1993 he moved to Hesse for TV 1860 Lich , where he took over the post of assistant coach after the end of his active career in 1998. Two years later, the Giessen 46ers hired him as an assistant to Joe Whelton .

In parallel to his coaching activity, Leibenath worked for the German Basketball Federation from 2004 and among other things took on the opponent's sighting.

In 2006 Leibenath moved to the Scottish Rocks in the British Basketball League for one season . There he was awarded the title “Coach of the Month March”. After his brief engagement in Scotland, he returned to Giessen and received a three-year contract as head coach of the 46ers.

At the end of the 2007/08 season he left the traditional Giessen club again and succeeded Chris Fleming at the first division competitor Artland Dragons for the 2008/09 season . He took advantage of a release clause contained in his contract in Gießen, which ran until 2010, to be able to switch to a club represented in European competition.

In May 2010, Leibenath's contract with Artland Dragons was not extended and the separation was announced. The team had previously missed the play-offs of the basketball Bundesliga for the second time under his leadership.

From September 2010 to January 2011 he stayed in Central Hesse again and worked as a player-coach for the third team of TV 1860 Lich, before he returned to the Osnabrück region and signed a contract as the new head coach of the GiroLive-Ballers Osnabrück in early January 2011 . But due to financial difficulties, the GiroLive-Ballers had to stop playing during the current season. Leibenath used his subsequent time without a club to do an internship at the top Turkish club Fenerbahce Istanbul .

Leibenath has been a trainer at Ratiopharm Ulm since May 2011 . Under his direction, Ulm managed to move back into the play-offs and was able to establish itself in the top group of the league. In the 2011/12 season he led the team to the German runner-up. Leibenath was awarded the title of Bundesliga coach of the year for his performance in his first season in Ulm in spring 2012 . Already at the beginning of the 2012/13 season, in which he ultimately led the team to the semi-finals, Leibenath extended his current contract until 2015 and stayed in Ulm beyond that. In 2013 and 2014 Ulm reached the final of the German cup competition under Leibenath, but missed the title win. In 2015, in addition to his coaching activity in Ulm, he was a member of a joint committee of the German Basketball Federation, the Basketball Bundesliga, the 2nd Basketball Bundesliga and the regional associations, which advised the leagues and associations on top-class sports. In the 2015/16 season, Ulm reached the Bundesliga final again under Leibenath, but lost 3-0 to Bamberg as in 2012. In 2014/15 and 2016/17 you advanced to the semifinals. In the 2016/17 season he led Ulm to 27 Bundesliga victories in a row, setting a new league record. In the game against Bayern Munich, which ended Ulm's winning streak in April 2017, Leibnath was expelled from the hall due to protests against a referee's decision. At the beginning of May 2017 he was named “Trainer of the Year”.

In the 2017/18 season he missed the leap into the championship round with Ulm as tenth in the Bundesliga. In March 2019 it was announced that Leibenath would take over the duties of sports director at the end of the 2018/19 season after eight years in the coaching office in Ulm in order to work with Managing Director Thomas Stoll to direct the sporting development of the team and in particular to introduce young players to Bundesliga tasks. At the end of May 2019, his time as a coach in Ulm ended when he was eliminated in the Bundesliga quarter-finals against Alba Berlin. Leibenath's team had not won in all three meetings with the capital city.
