Joe Whelton

Joe Whelton (born February 15, 1956 , actually Joseph Whelton ) is an American basketball coach .

career

Whelton grew up in East Hartford , Connecticut , and played for the University of Connecticut basketball team between 1974 and 1978 . He also graduated in “Social Services / Special Education”.

Whelton was a teacher and basketball coach at Wethersfield High School in Connecticut, then an assistant coach at the University of Hartford , before moving to England in 1983 at the age of 27 to be the head coach of the Warrington Vikings, which then became the Manchester United basketball team. He led the team to the British championship in 1985 and 1986, and in 1988 they made it into the quarter-finals of the Korac Cup European Cup . In addition, he looked after the British national team as head coach in 1988 and led the selection in qualifying for the Summer Olympics to sixth place, the participation in Seoul was thus narrowly missed.

In 1988 Whelton moved from Manchester to Switzerland and took over the post of head coach at Friborg Olympic . After making the team Swiss champions in 1992, he accepted the offer of league rival Pallacanestro Bellinzona , where he worked as a coach between 1992 and 1996 and won the club three times in a row (1993, 1994, 1995) and four times in a row Cup victory (1993, 1994, 1995, 1996) led.

In May 1996 he returned to Manchester, the team was now called the Manchester Giants . In 1997 he switched to the German Bundesliga, Whelton took over the coaching position at Brandt Hagen in the 1997/98 season , and in 1998/99 he coached Rhöndorfer TV and led the team to the semi-finals of the Bundesliga playoffs.

From 1999 to 2003 Whelton was the head coach of MTV Giessen , then he moved to TBB Trier for the 2003/04 season , where he replaced Bernard Thompson and remained in office until December 2007.

He then went back to the United States, directed the YMCA's youth program in Venice, Florida, and was the head coach of the girls' team at Venice High School.

At the beginning of January 2010, however, he returned to Europe and became head coach of the Lugano Tigers in Switzerland. He held this position until 2011, during which time he led Lugano to the Swiss championship titles in 2010 and 2011 as well as to the cup win in 2011. For the 2011/2012 season, Whelton became head coach of the State College of Florida and stayed in office for a year. For the 2012/2013 season he was introduced as the new head coach of the Foshan Long Lions in China. In the 2013/14 season Whelton was a coach at the Sarasota Christian School in Florida, in the 2015/16 season he led the Chinese club Liaoning Jiebao Hunters to the runner-up in the CBA league. He then started a job placement company in Florida.
