German cup winner : 1998, 2001

The TBB Trier was a German basketball team from Trier in Rhineland-Palatinate , which played in the first national basketball league from 1990 to 2015. The Bundesliga license was held by Treveri Basketball AG. The team won the German Basketball Cup in 1998 and 2001. In recent history she has dedicated herself to training young German talents. With Henrik Rödl , who became European champion as a player in 1993 and won seven championship titles with ALBA Berlin , the TBB had one of the most famous German basketball players as a coach until June 2015, who is driving the project “training instead of buying”. On May 1, 2015, the insolvency proceedings of Treveri Basketball AG were opened. The now best basketball team in the Moselle city is ProA -Ligist Gladiators Trier .

history

Beginnings

On the initiative of the later than hammer throw coach known Ernst Klement , the club was founded as a department within the TV Germania Trier eV in 1956th After the club had been one of the top teams on a regional level for many years, it was promoted to the second division in the 1985/1986 season under coach Wolfgang Esser .

Second division

The TVG continued under coach Wolfgang Esser in the southern group of the second basketball league. Esser relied on the "golden generation" of local, regional basketball players. The TVG team was able to finish the first season in the second highest division in fifth place in the table. After reaching places four and three, the club rose to the basketball league in 1990 .

Ascent

Due to this success with the need for a more professional orientation, the basketball department was spun off in the same year and founded as a new club under the name "TVG Basketball Trier". In terms of sport, the club was able to hold its own in league one in the first few years. Under coach Esser and his successor Yuri Selikhow , world-class basketball players such as Alexander Belostenny , Sergei Babkow and Sascha Hupmann played in the Trier ranks .

The Beck era - Cup victories in 1998 and 2001

In the summer of 1994, the American coach Don Beck took over the Trier Bundesliga team. Under his leadership, Trier achieved the greatest sporting successes after initial difficulties (three wins in the 1994/1995 season, relegation in relegation). With Don Beck, the US-American players who were to shape the most successful era of Trier basketball came to the Moselle: ex-NBA player Bernard Thompson , Keith Gray and crowd favorite Carl “Charly” Brown .

In 1998 Trier won its first German title by winning the cup round. At the Top4 tournament in the Frankfurt-Höchst Ballroom, TVG won the games against Ulm and Rhöndorf after extra time and thus secured the cup victory. In the following Bundesliga round in 1998/99 , Trier was one of the favorites for the German championship. The home win against the reigning champions ALBA Berlin fell in this season. The TVG was almost hopelessly behind with 25 points (32:57) in the third quarter before Carl Brown brought his team back into the game with six three-pointers without a miss. Trier won the game with 80:78. After winning the autumn championship, Trier was followed by bad luck with injuries in the second half of the season, the race for the championship ended in the playoff quarter-finals with 1: 3 against Leverkusen. After the entry of the Trier company Herzog TELECOM AG as main sponsor, the association was renamed "HERZOGtel Trier eV" in 1999. In 2001 the Trier basketball players were able to repeat their national cup victory. The new name came to an early end with the bankruptcy of the telecommunications company in April 2001. The entire club - now also insolvent - competed in the first division under the name HERZOGtel until the summer of 2002, after which the newly founded Trier Basketball GmbH took over the Bundesliga license, and the team was henceforth known as TBB Trier. In July 2002, the former Bundesliga player Patrick Börder took over the position of managing director of the operating company. On September 1, 2005 he was replaced by Lothar Hermeling .

Trier Basketball GmbH - New Arena

Don Beck then got out of his current contract and was replaced by the former player Bernard Thompson. The season was unsuccessful, with only five wins Trier had to go into the qualifying round. On May 25, 2003 the TBB competed in the new Trier arena for the first time. The new building of the hall through the city had become necessary because the sports hall on Mäusheckerweg with officially 2200 seats was too small for the basketball league. The TBB games could now be played in front of up to 5900 spectators. Despite the attendance records, the Trier could not keep the sporting class. However, by increasing the league from 14 to 16 teams, a wildcard was advertised, which went to the Moselaner. The next season, Joe Whelton took the helm as head coach. With Whelton, who brought the league top scorer BJ McKie from Gießen to the Moselle, TBB Trier reached the playoffs for the last time to date. In the quarter-finals there was a derby against Telekom Baskets Bonn, Trier lost 3-1. Over 11,000 spectators saw the two home games in the new arena. In the summer of 2007 Joe Whelton's contract was renewed for three years. Due to an ongoing series of defeats, the club was forced to take him on leave on December 5, 2007. He was replaced by the Belgian Yves Defraigne , who should prevent relegation. Defraigne brought in five wins with the team, but he could not prevent relegation with the announced "European style". However, since the second climber from the ProA, the Cuxhaven BasCats , did not apply for a BBL license for financial reasons, the license was awarded by wildcard . By the deadline, only Moselle residents had applied for this wildcard. With a 16-0 decision, the BBL teams decided to award the wildcard to TBB Trier. Despite relegation Defraigne stayed in Trier and rebuilt the team according to his ideas. Among other things, Chris Copeland found his way to the Mosel, who was the league's top scorer in the 2009/2010 season and later played for the New York Knicks in the NBA. The TBB started the 2009/2010 season well before the team fell into a negative series. After 15 defeats in 16 games Defraigne and his assistant Frank de Meulemeester were on leave, Aaron McCarthy was hired as a "firefighter". In contrast to 2008, the project succeeded, McCarthy brought in the two necessary victories and managed to stay in the league, then he left the Moselle town again.

present

Treveri Basketball AG

In the days of TBB GmbH, the Trier Bundesliga team was dependent on a few shareholders who were largely unknown to the public. For more identification and financial security, the burden should be spread across several shoulders in the future. That is why those responsible at TBB met with Trier entrepreneurs such as Sascha Beitzel and Ralph Moog, the former mayor of Trier, Helmut Schröer, and TVG promotion trainer Wolfgang Esser, who is also head of the Trier Arena, in 2009. Together, the situation of Trier basketball should be analyzed and a future-proof plan should be drawn up. It was decided to found a joint stock company. Not only were many entrepreneurs able to subscribe for shares, but also TBB fans and private individuals were able to acquire blocks of shares valued at € 100 to € 50,000. In this way, a start-up capital of € 250,000 was achieved for the new AG within a short period of time. The name of the company is derived from the Roman name of the city of Trier (Augusta Treverorum) or its residents (Treverer), and it also enables the established abbreviation "TBB" to be retained.

The concept

An advisory board was set up for TBB AG to search for a sporting concept, in which James Marsh, long-time TBB / TVG professional and German national player, Rainer Loch, former TVG player and coach and promotion coach Wolfgang Esser advised those responsible. It was decided to establish Trier as a location where young German players get a chance to prove themselves at the highest level and thus mature into full-fledged Bundesliga professionals. The motto of the TBB is the slogan “Train instead of buy”. For the Bundesliga club, this has the advantage that "unfinished" players are cheaper than trained basketball professionals. With a budget in the lower quarter of the league, this aspect is not to be despised. In addition, it is easier for fans to identify with the team when local players have played for the club for several years. In the past, due to the abolition of foreigner restrictions after the Bosman ruling, many Americans flooded the German market who wanted to use the league as a springboard and often disappeared again after a year. German players, on the other hand, only took the back seats on the bench despite their talent. With the new concept, which was associated with a certain risk, Treveri Basketball AG took on a pioneering role in German basketball. So far, hardly any club had dared to entrust the supposedly weaker German players with an important role in the rotation.

Henrik Rödl

Henrik Rödl , who became European champion as a player in 1993 and won seven German championships with ALBA Berlin , was found as coach for the concept of working with young German players . Rödl worked as a trainer for three years for the professional team of the "Albatrosses" before he took over the U19 team from Berlin, with which he was twice runner-up and once champion. It was James Marsh who was able to convince his former national team colleague to pitch his tents on the Moselle. Henrik Rödl, who has one of the best networks in German basketball, brought among others the talented Philip Zwiener from the former series champion to TBB.

"Signature Affair"

In the summer of 2010, allegations against TBB manager Lothar Hermeling were reported in the media that he had forged the signature of Trier player Brian Brown under a wage waiver. The press wrote of a "signature affair". In July 2010, Treveri Basketball AG announced the leave of absence for Hermeling, who is the managing director of the operating company. Hermeling resigned as a board member at the beginning of September 2010, but was still in office as responsible for marketing and sales matters. Shortly thereafter came the immediate separation from the manager, as the relationship of trust suffered "lasting damage", as the media release said. The newspaper Trierischer V olksfreund reported in mid-September 2010, citing the public prosecutor's office in Trier, that it had a written confession from the former managing director, which was extensive and plausible.

2010/2011 season

For the first season of the new Treveri Basketball AG, the squad was completely rebuilt according to the concept and the new ideas of the coach. From the 12-man squad, only the centers George Evans and Maik Zirbes , the Luxembourg national player Samy Picard and German-Greek Kosta Karamatskos remained on board. Rödl brought the young Germans Oskar Faßler , Oliver Clay and Philip Zwiener from Berlin with him, as well as Captain Dragan Dojčin . For the construction of position came Dru Joyce , who in high school times with NBA superstar LeBron James had played together and John Bynum as a backup. Shooting Guard Barry Stewart moved from Mississippi State University to Trier. The playing time of German players increased significantly in the 2010/2011 season, Trier took a top position in the league comparison. The TBB became one of the surprise teams in the league and fought until the final phase to make it into the play-off round, which was just missed. The chosen "Trier path" achieved great respect in the basketball scene throughout Germany. A special honor for the program was the award of Philip Zwiener as MIP (Most Improved Player) of the Beko Basketball Bundesliga. Zwiener only made short appearances in Berlin, in Trier he became a top performer and with over 12 points on average, he was the best German point collector in the entire league.

2011/2012 season

The squad was changed only slightly for the next season. George Evans, at that time already 40 years old, ended his active career. For him came Andreas Seiferth , who played under Rödl at ALBA in the NBBL, Regionalliga and later ProB, where he was voted “Youngster of the Year”. Joshiko Saibou also came from Berlin , who had become German U19 champions as a development player in Rödl's team in 2009. Probably the most important new addition was Nate Linhart . The American came from the NBA D-League and demonstrated his fighting skills and excellent defense from the start. Barry Stewart left the TBB and switched to the LTi Gießen 46ers . The 2011/2012 season did not go as well for TBB as the first under Rödl, but Trier finished in 14th place in the table, a little above the budget, which is said to be 2.2 million euros. The home strength of the TBB was striking, taking nine of the eleven victories of the season in front of their own audience. Among other things, there were surprise victories against Bayern Munich , the EWE Baskets Oldenburg and in the derby against the Telekom Baskets Bonn . The concept of the “Trier Way” continued to bear fruit, with Maik Zirbes the TBB provided the MIP for the second time in a row. Accordingly, other clubs had also become aware of Zirbes, which is why Zirbes left his home town of Trier and from then on went basket-hunting after paying a transfer fee for the reigning German champion Bamberg.

2012/2013 season

In the summer of 2012 there was a change in the team. The TBB felt the downside of the training concept: players who have improved and contribute to the success of the team leave Trier to earn more money elsewhere. Maik Zirbes went to Bamberg, Dru Joyce to Oldenburg and Philip Zwiener to Bremerhaven. The TBB had to replace its three best point collectors. In addition, John Bynum went to Chemnitz (ProA), Oscar Faßler to Gießen, James Washington to Leitershofen (ProB) and Samy Picard back to Luxembourg. Nevertheless, the search for new players was positive, head coach Henrik Rödl was able to sign all of the preferred candidates very quickly. This included above all Barry Stewart, who came back to the Moselle after a year in Giessen, to the delight of TBB fans. New to the team were builder players Jarrett Howell and Brian Harper , who is best known for his spectacular style of play. In addition, the German national players Mathis Mönninghoff and Bastian Doreth , who was loaned from FC Bayern München Basketball. The 21-year-old Zimbabwean Vitalis Chikoko , who is said to have great development potential , moved from Göttingen . Shortly before the start of the season it turned out that captain Dragan Dojcin can no longer be used regularly in his third season with the TBB due to knee and Achilles tendon problems. A few days before the first game of the season, the Canadian Jermaine Bucknor was signed , whose contract was extended to summer 2014 after two months. TBB got off to an excellent start into the season, four wins in the first five games meant the best start to the season since the 1990s. For the second time in Rödl's tenure, Trier became the league's surprise team. After the first half of the season the TBB was in seventh place in the table, which meant that they were allowed to participate in the Beko BBL Cup for the first time since the reform of the competition . However, the TBB was awarded a difficult away game at the runner-up in Ulm, which was lost. The second half of the season was much weaker at first, also because the direct competitors could come up with additional commitments, which was not possible in Trier for financial reasons. Nevertheless, the TBB was hard to beat, especially in their own hall, in March there were home wins against league croesus Bayern Munich and the derby competitor Telekom Baskets Bonn. This was followed by a lull of five defeats in a row, including against direct competitors Hagen and Tübingen. The TBB was under pressure at the game in Frankfurt, but was able to prevent them from slipping into the relegation battle with a victory. In the following week, ALBA Berlin was completely surprisingly beaten in its own hall, the 14,500-seat O²-World . The TBB finished the season with 15 wins and 19 defeats in 12th place. The Trier Trail was successfully continued in the 2012/2013 season. Although the MIP title did not go to Trier for the third time in a row, Andreas Seiferth, a Trier player, came second in this category. This makes the TBB by far the most successful team in the training of young players in recent years.

2013/2014 season

With the current contract Jermaine Bucknor, Vitalis Chikoko and Mathis Mönninghoff stayed. As a first change, the club announced the return of Frank Baum , who, as a former player and assistant coach, became the new sporting director. In addition, Dragan Dojčin has ended his active career, he switched to the coaching camp and took over the U16 Bundesliga team.

Season 2014/2015

On March 19, 2015, the association announced that due to a deficit of 800,000 euros at the beginning of the year and a still existing shortfall of 300,000 to 400,000 euros, an application for bankruptcy would be filed with the local court on the following day. No salaries have been paid to the employees since January 2015.

Due to incorrect information regarding the current financial situation at the end of December 2014 and the insolvency of Treveri Basketball AG, TBB Trier was deducted 8 rating points in the Beko BBL . However, these were later reduced to 6 by an objection from Trier's side.

With the 78:83 defeat against Ratiopharm ulm on April 24, 2015, the club's first relegation from the BBL was certain.

On May 1, 2015, all Treveri Basketball AG contracts were terminated as the group was no longer able to pay its debts.

2015/2016 season

As a relegated athlete, TBB Trier - had it not been insolvent - could have participated in the second-rate ProA. The free space was reassigned by the league. On May 31, the ProA licensing committee announced that 10 teams had voted to participate in the newly founded Trier ball sports movement UG. This organization, which is independent of TBB Trier, plays in the ProA under the name Gladiators Trier . From July 2015, the Dutchman Marco van den Berg became the coach of the new club .

Since June 2013 there is also a Treveri Basketball e. V. The association can be viewed as a development association. The association still exists (as of January 2016).

budget

The exact budget of TBB Trier in the last season 2014/2015 is not known, but the shortfall in this season was around 800,000 euros.

Youth work

Like all Bundesliga clubs, TBB Trier had a youth team in the U16 and U19 Bundesliga. The teams run under the name TBB Junior Team. The organization of the youth work is done by Trierer Basketball e. V. The coaches of the teams were provided by TBB AG, most recently Simon Frey (U16) and Josip Bosnjak (U19) looked after the young players. Frank Baum as the sporting director of the TBB Trier dealt with the organization and conceptual work on the youth sector.

successes

Cup victories

The greatest successes in the club history of the Trier basketball Bundesliga club were the cup wins in 1998 and 2001.

Alleged autumn championship 1998

On the last matchday of the first half of the 1998/1999 season, TVG won against ALBA Berlin with an outstanding energy performance. The TVG and ALBA had the same number of points after this game. At this point in time, there were unclear rules for determining the table status. During the first half of the season, teams with equal points are ranked according to their basket ratio, during the second half of the season, the direct comparison between the teams counts. ALBA Berlin had the better basket ratio in autumn 1998, but TVG won the direct encounter. According to the criteria of the second half of the season, Trier would have been in first place in the table, but officially it remained second.

Venue

Sports hall on Mäusheckerweg

The gymnastics club Germania Trier played its home games in amateur times up to 2003 in the sports hall on Mäusheckerweg, or “Mäushecker” for short. With additional stands behind the baskets, the hall officially holds 2200 spectators. But up to 2500 people crowded into the school sports hall in the Ehrang district of Trier for top games.

Arena Trier

The statutes of the Beko Basketball Bundesliga stipulate a TV-compatible hall with at least 3000 seats as the home ground for every Bundesliga club. The city of Trier therefore had the Arena Trier built, which with almost 5,000 seats more than met the requirements of the league. The maximum capacity for basketball games is officially 5,900 seats, including around 900 standing places. The arena can be expanded with additional stands so that the capacity grows to 6,100 spectators. The number of spectators when a game is sold out varies from game to game, for example the game against FC Bayern Munich on March 17, 2012 with 5,984 guests was sold out.

Club culture

Fans

The fans of the TBB Trier were in the fan club “Fastbreak Trier 1997 e. V. - Interest group of the friends of Trier basketball ”. The fan club has over 300 members. Already in the 90s there was a pronounced fan culture in Trier, victory and also the successes in the cup were celebrated together with the team in the Trier cellar pub Cubiculum. Fastbreak Trier created the atmosphere at home games with drums and a block flag, and the fan club also organized the away trips. The club is also active outside of the games, so there are regular ball donations to schools and other social activities. The Trier family made a name for themselves in the German basketball fan scene with the invention of the fan club tournament. A basketball tournament has been held annually since 1998, where teams from basketball fan clubs from all over Germany can put together. Around 30 teams take part every year and spend an often wet, early weekend together at different locations. Together with the Hagen fan club, Fastbreak Trier is the German fan club record champion, both clubs have five titles each. Fastbreak Trier now supports the new club, the Gladiators Trier

mascot

In the 1990s and the beginning of the 21st century, the TVG had no mascot. The tasks of such, namely to entertain and heat up the audience, were taken over by the team masseur Axel Mock, known as "Aggy". Mock, whose trademarks are a long black beard and large glasses, ran along the playing field of the Mäusheckerweghalle to animate the audience. He ended his show with a handstand rollover. Later "Aggy" had to pay tribute to his age and could no longer perform artistic interludes. That is why he was replaced by a mascot figure, also called "Aggy", which was designed based on his model. Mock himself is still active as a masseur for the Trier basketball players, for the 27th year in a row. Because of his eye-catching appearance he is known in all German basketball halls and a welcome guest. The Trier legend celebrated its 700th Bundesliga game at the 2012 away game in Hagen.
