Jamal Shuler (born January 11, 1986 in Jacksonville , North Carolina ) is an American basketball player . After studying in his home country, he played as a professional in Europe . At the beginning of his professional career, Shuler played two years at TBB Trier in the German basketball league , before continuing his career in the French LNB Pro A with a one-year break at Chimik Juschne in the Ukraine in 2013/14. With JSF Nanterre Shuler won the EuroChallenge 2014/15 and was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the final tournament in this competition .

Career

Shuler went to Virginia Commonwealth University to study in 2004 , where he was active for the Rams college team in the NCAA Division I Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) . In 2007 you won the first round game in the national final against the renowned Blue Devils of Duke University , with Shuler hit four of five three-point throws in this game. The qualification for the second round, in which one was eliminated against the Panthers of the University of Pittsburgh , meant the furthest advance of the Rams in this competition since the 1980s.

After completing his studies, Shuler became a professional in Europe and played two seasons at TBB Trier from 2008 to 2010. In the supporting program of the BBL All-Star Game 2010 he was the winner of the dunking competition. In the 2010/11 season he played for the French club Jeanne d'Arc from Vichy in the LNB Pro A . Shuler caused a stir in January 2011 when, after an outstanding game against Limoges CSP with 32 points and seven rebounds six seconds before the end , he discarded two free throws in a one-point lead , which were bitterly punished with a successful rapid attack by the opponent and the defeat for Vichy would have meant. In the remaining time, a teammate threw the ball to Shuler, who was able to push it into the basket with the final siren before reaching the center line and so turned from a tragic hero to a triumphant. However, the season ended on a relegation zone and Shuler got a contract with the French champions SLUC Nancy for the 2011/12 season, for which he also played in the ULEB Euroleague 2011/12 , where they were eliminated in the preliminary round. In the French championship one could not defend the title and was eliminated early in the first play-off round. In the following season, Shuler suffered a cruciate ligament rupture in his first game and was out for months. As a replacement, Nancy signed another US professional, Torrell Martin , who had previously played in the top German division. Shuler could only play in less than half of the season's games and Nancy missed participation in the play-offs. In the final table, as third from bottom, they only had one victory ahead of a relegation place.

For the 2013/14 season, Shuler got a contract in the Basketball Superliga Ukraine with BK Chimik from Juschne , which was represented in this competition for the first time in the 2013/14 Eurocup in the club's history. Right away, the team was able to qualify for the knockout phase together with group winner Alba Berlin , in which, however, they were eliminated in the round of 16 against TED Ankara Kolejliler . Together with his compatriot and teammate Romeo Travis , Shuler was one of the few US professionals who stayed in the country during the violent clashes that followed the Euromaidan . Nevertheless, it was enough for the team after reaching the play-off final series for the first time only to the runner-up after losing defending champion BK Budiwelnyk Kiev . Shuler then returned to France and played for the 2013 champions and cup winners Jeunesse sportive des Fontenelles (JSF) from Nanterre . For Nanterre, it was not enough for the third national title success in a row after losing the quarter-finals against Shuler's former club SLUC Nancy in the LNB Pro A 2014/15 as second in the main round at the start of the play-offs. Instead, the team won an international competition for the first time in the EuroChallenge 2014/15 when they defeated the German representative Fraport Skyliners in the semifinals of the Final Four tournament and finally in the final with one point difference, hosts Trabzonspor . Shuler was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the final tournament at the club's first international title win .

At the LNB Pro A 2015/16 , Shuler switched to the first division returning from Monaco , who participates in the French league. The team of the financially strong club was no ordinary climber, but reached first place after the main round and defeated Shuler's former team JSF Nanterre in the first round of the play-offs for the championship , before losing to the record champions and later title winners ASVEL in the semi-final series . He then returned to Nanterre (2017/18), in 2018/19 he was under contract with Hapoel Tel Aviv in Israel , and in 2019 he joined Iraklis Thessaloniki ( Greece ).
