ASVEL Basket ( A ssociation S portive V illeurbanne E veil L Yonnais ) is the name of a professional basketball team in France . The Lyon- based team plays in the top French league LNB Pro A and was founded in 1948 by the merger of the clubs AS Villeurbanne and Éveil Lyonnais. The team plays its home games in the Astroballe basketball hall .

history

2001-2007: Adecco ASVEL

In 2001 the ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne was renamed Adecco ASVEL as part of a sponsorship .

2007-2014

In 2007, ASVEL created a new logo after Adecco ended its name sponsorship. The club won the French Cup competition in 2008 after six years without a title with 86-76 against Cholet Basket .

The following season (2008/09) was able to finish the ASVEL in first place in the main round. The team then won the national championship in the playoffs for the seventeenth time.

The 2011/12 season could only be finished in twelfth place of the regular season, so the club was not qualified for the playoffs.

In the 2012/13 season, ASVEL was able to qualify for the playoffs again with third place in the main round. The quarter-finals against Le Mans Sarthe Basket could be won, but they were eliminated in the semi-finals after two defeats against Strasbourg IG .

In the 2013/14 season, seventh place in the regular season was achieved. In the quarterfinals they were eliminated after two defeats against Limoges CSP .

2014-2018

NBA player Tony Parker , minority shareholder since 2009, announced on March 21, 2014 that he was aiming for a majority shareholding in ASVEL and that he wanted to take over the presidency of the club from next season. One of his goals is to make the club one of the best known in Europe and to build a new, larger hall. Tony Parker has been the official President of ASVEL since June 30, 2014.

The construction plans for the new home ground with 10,500 spectator seats were published in July 2016.

ASVEL finished the 2015/16 season in fifth place in the main round. The team then won the national championship in the playoffs for the eighteenth time. A 2-0 deficit against Strasbourg IG could still be turned around in the final series .

At the end of March 2017, in addition to Parker, Nicolas Batum , another NBA player, became a shareholder in the ASVEL operating company Infinity Nine Sports. Batum took over the overall sporting management of ASVEL as well as the Tony Parker Academy and the women's team Lyon Basket Féminin, which are also part of the company. Parker remained president and majority owner of the group.

Since 2018: LDLC ASVEL

In September 2018 the team name was sold to the company LDLC, so that from then on they participated in the game operation as LDLC ASVEL. In addition, the team colors have been changed from traditional green to white and black. According to club owner Tony Parker, the partnership was agreed for a period of ten years by means of "the largest contract in the history of French basketball". In June 2019, ASVEL announced that it would be working with the Olympique Lyonnais football club , among other things, in an effort to build a new arcade, but also in marketing . In the course of this partnership, Olympique Lyonnais became a shareholder in the operating company of the basketball team.

In the 18/19 season , Lyon-Villeurbanne won the French championship again. In addition, the team also won the French cup competition . In May 2020, the club separated from coach Zvezdan Mitrović , who had worked for ASVEL since 2018. Parker accused the Montenegrin of having crossed borders, Mitrović publicly defended himself against the accusation and his dismissal, which called on the Euroleague to arbitrate the matter.
