Étoile Sportive Saint-Michel Le Portel Côte d'Opale , ESSM Le Portel for short , is a French basketball club from Le Portel in the Hauts-de-France region . The first team has been playing in the top national division LNB Pro A since being promoted to the 2016/17 season .

history

founding

With the support of the Public Education Department of the Parish of Le Portel, the Société Saint Michel was founded on November 24, 1920 on the initiative of Father Louis Sauvet and other personalities from Le Portel . At the same time, the Étoile Sportive was created as a sports department, which bundled the activities in the fields of athletics and basketball. Since there were no championships at that time, games were often played in the schoolyard against other teams in the department ; often in the form of tournaments.

In 1928, Ernest Fouquez was named the first president of the basketball division of Étoile Sportive Saint-Michel. In 1932 the association joined the newly founded Fédération Française de Basket Ball .

Promotion in the professional leagues

For the 2007/08 season, the promotion to the second highest national league LNB Pro B succeeded . From 2010 the team was able to qualify regularly (2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016) for the play-offs in the Pro B.

In the French cup competition 2014/15 you could sensationally advance to the final. Along the way, victories against the Pro-A teams Le Mans Sarthe Basket , STB Le Havre and ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne were celebrated. In the semifinals, you could finally even defeat the reigning French champions Limoges CSP . In the final, ESSM met Strasbourg IG and finally had to admit defeat 74:87.

Since November 28, 2015, the team has been welcoming their opponents in a new hall (Le Chaudron) that can seat 3500 spectators.

On June 10, 2016, ESSM was able to secure the championship in the Pro B and thus promotion to the top national league, the LNB Pro A , for the 2016/17 season with a 67:52 victory against ALM Évreux Basket .
