The Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball team originated from the Maccabi Tel Aviv Sports Association, the largest sports club in Israel , which originated in Jaffa in 1906 as HaRishon LeZiyyon . The team based in the Mediterranean metropolis Tel Aviv is among the top performers in Europe with five European Cup victories.

Maccabi "Elektra" Tel Aviv (until the 2007/08 season Maccabi "Elite" Tel Aviv) ( Hebrew : מכבי תל-אביב) is one of the best basketball teams in Europe, having won the European Champions Cup five times. Since 1969 the food company "Elite" has been the main sponsor, whose name has become part of the club's name. The main sponsor was changed in the 2008/09 season. This is now the Israeli elevator manufacturer "Elektra". The team is jointly owned by Fedanco Limited, RK Maccabi Ltd (from Mr. Raanan Katz), Newco Sport Ltd. and Naftali SS Investments Ltd.

The club won 51 national championship titles (23 of them in a row from 1970 to 1992) and was national cup winners 44 times. Since 1977 the club has won the European Champions League five times and finished second seven times.

The club started playing basketball in the 1930s. In 1954 they won the first Israeli championship title in the newly founded league. Since then, the club has never finished worse than third in this league.

The first international game took place in 1958. By August 2005 the team played 577 times internationally and won 359 games. In 1977 Maccabi won the Championship Cup as the first international cup, which the club was able to win in 1981. In May 2004 they won the final of the Euroleague and again the following year; in 2006 the club lost in the final against CSKA Moscow .

In 2005 Maccabi Tel Aviv faced the Toronto Raptors' NBA club in a friendly . Anthony Parker scored the crucial point in that game and leads Tel Aviv to victory. Maccabi Tel Aviv was the first European team to beat an NBA team in North America.

In the 2013/14 season, Maccabi won the ULEB Euroleague for the third time . After defeating the 2006 final opponent, CSKA Moscow, in the Final Four, Real Madrid was defeated in the final with 98:86 after extra time.
