Anthony Michael Parker (born June 19, 1975 in Des Moines , Iowa ) is a retired American basketball player who was active in the North American NBA and Italy and Israel. During his time with Maccabi Tel Aviv he won the ULEB Euroleague twice .
Career
college
Anthony Parker studied at Bradley University, where he had 18.9 points per game and a three-point throw rate of 42% in his third season .
Philadelphia 76ers
Parker was elected in the 1997 NBA Draft by the New Jersey Nets , but was immediately transferred to the Philadelphia 76ers . Plagued by injuries, he was able to play only 39 games in two seasons in Philadelphia, in which he scored 1.9 points per game.
Orlando Magic
Before the 1999/00 season , Parker and Harvey Grant were transferred to the Orlando Magic for Billy Owens , where he was able to improve his stats, but still not convinced and was released in January and spent the rest of the season with the Quad City Thunder in the CBA .
Careers in Europe
Parker moved to the first Israeli basketball league at Maccabi Tel Aviv in 2001 . There he should close the gap of the changing shooting guard Doron Sheffer . In his first season with Tel Aviv, he won the championship and the cup. The personal highlight this season was winning the Suproleague . In the following season he won both national titles with his team and was able to advance to the Final Four of the Euroleague .
In 2002 he moved from Tel Aviv to Italy to Virtus Rome , which he left after six months and returned to Maccabi Tel Aviv.
In 2004 Parker's career reached its temporary peak: He was able to win both titles in Israel, and also the MVP title for the best player in the Israeli league, as well as the Euroleague. Tel Aviv beat Fortitudo Bologna 118-74. After the final of the Euroleague tournament in 2004, Parker was named "Euroleague MVP".
In the 2005 season, Parker and Maccabi Tel Aviv dominated the Euroleague and the Israeli League. In the final of the Euroleague Final Four, Tel Aviv beat the team from Tau Vitoria with 90:78 and was able to defend its title. Parker took his second MVP title as best player of the past Euroleague season after the final.
In the 2005/06 season, the last season for him in Europe, he won the Israeli championship and the cup for the fifth time. In the Euroleague, however, Maccabi Tel Aviv lost in the final against CSKA Moscow . After the season Parker moved to the North American professional league NBA to the Toronto Raptors .
Parker was honored in May 2008 as one of the fifty great figures in basketball in Europe . The award was given by the Euroleague Basketball during an official ceremony in the Palacio de Deportes de la Comunidad de Madrid , in Madrid .
Toronto Raptors
In 2006 he returned to the NBA at the age of 31. With the Toronto Raptors he was able to establish himself as one of the best three shooters in the league. In the first two years after his return, the Raptors even made it into the playoffs. After his contract expired in 2009, he was not signed again because DeMar DeRozan was a promising rookie in his position.
Cleveland Cavaliers
In the summer of 2009 he signed a contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers , which had several superstars in their ranks: LeBron James , Shaquille O'Neal and Antawn Jamison . Parker started in all 82 regular season games in which the Cavaliers became the best team. However, you had to admit defeat to the Boston Celtics in the second round of the playoffs . After losing James and O'Neal after the season, you could only win 19 games in the following season. Also in the 2011/12 season they clearly missed the playoffs.
On June 27, 2012, Parker announced his retirement.
Private
Parker is married with one son. His younger sister Candace Parker is currently playing for the Los Angeles Sparks of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) and is considered one of the greatest talents in women's basketball.
