DeMar Darnell DeRozan (born August 7, 1989 in Compton , California ) is an American basketball player who has been under contract with the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA since 2018 . Before that, he worked for the Toronto Raptors for a long time and during this time he became a 4 × NBA All-Star . As of 2020, DeRozan is the most scoring player in the history of the Raptors franchise .
Career
High school
DeRozan attended Compton High School and played on the school team every four years. As a freshman, he averaged 26.1 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. In his second year as a sophomore , he could not repeat his first year performances, but still scored 22.6 points and 8.4 rebounds. In the following year, his junior year, he scored 22.3 points and 7.8 rebounds as well as a respectable 3.0 assists and 3.2 steals per game.
In his senior year of high school , he scored 29.2 points and 7.9 rebounds, leading his team to a record of 26 wins and 6 losses. In addition, he also won the championship of the regional high school league for the second time in a row. Due to its individual performance and its posiviten influence on his team, he was also the 2008 Most Valuable Player ( Most Valuable Player selected) his high school league.
After his senior year of high school, he was widely recognized as one of the top basketball talent of his year.
college
In November 2007, he accepted the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles , rejecting offers from the renowned University of North Carolina and Arizona State University .
DeRozan played for the USC Trojans for a year . He was the third best scorer (13.9 points), second best rebounder (5.9 rebounds), and third best assistant (1.5 assists) of his team. He also had the eighth best hit rate of his conference with 52.3% .
NBA
On April 8, 2008, he announced that he would sign up for the 2009 NBA Draft . He decided against a return to his university team. In June 2009 he was selected as the 9th player by the Toronto Raptors .
In 2010 DeRozan did not make it into the rookie team at the 2010 NBA All-Star Game in Dallas , but secured a place in the slam dunk contest the following day . However, he lost this as well as Gerald Wallace and Shannon Brown against Nate Robinson . DeRozan came second in this competition. In 2011 he again took part in the Slam Dunk Contest for the injured Brandon Jennings . He finished third behind Blake Griffin and JaVale McGee , but according to a poll on "NBA.com" 36% of fans, and thus most of them, found him best.
In 2014 DeRozan was first called into the NBA All-Star Game . DeRozan finished the season better in all categories, including points (22.7), rebounds (4.3) and assists (4.0). With the Raptors, he finished third in the Eastern Conference. In the playoffs, however, they were eliminated in the first round against the Brooklyn Nets .
After another successful year with the Raptors, DeRozan received his second NBA All Star nomination in the 2015-16 season . In the 2016-17 season he was invited to the NBA All-Star Game for the third time. DeRozan also achieved his best career value with 27.3 points per game and thus finished fourth in the scorer list this season.
On July 18, 2018, he and Jakob Pöltl moved to the San Antonio Spurs in exchange for Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green . He left the Raptors as the best points collector in team history.
National team
DeRozan was a member of the US national team that won gold at the 2014 World Basketball Championship in Spain. He also won the gold medal with the US selection at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro .
